Clur Posted September 14, 2009 Share Posted September 14, 2009 I am shocked! I last got chickens nearly 2.5 years ago, 3 hybrids at 9 pound each (on offer and down from 12 pound at the time!). Looking again now, most hybrids birds seem to be 20 pound each, and pure breeds more than that!! And I want 3 Crikey, you can tell chicken-keeping is popular now! Falkor Posted September 14, 2009 Share Posted September 14, 2009 Hybrids are £12 locally to me. I have seen them at £14 a little further south with a Columbine at £18. I have found that pure breed vary greatly in price depending on age and source. POL CLB from well know poultry centre £30 and local breeder £20. We had our 1st roast chicken dinner since we had them yesterday and the DH asked why we had them as the free range bird I brought was only £6.50. Hope you find some breeds you like soon to get some friends for Dilys Me too; am thinking about going back to Cotswold Chickens but not sure. Has anyone else got positive experiences with them? We're getting the stuff to separate the run hopefully this week, and then looking to get the new chickens after that - possibly next Sunday or the weekend after. We don't want to leave Dilys alone too long, just weddings etc getting in the way at the moment! Not worried about the breed, but will probably stick with hybrids. GGLGirls Posted September 14, 2009 Share Posted September 14, 2009 We got our 3 gingernut ranger chicks in March (now 6mths) free from my neices school as they were brought into the nursery for the class to see them hatch. The school was going to send them back to the farm if no-one took them home. OH had always wanted some chickens so we were dropped into the deep end with them - so glad we did. Redwing Posted September 14, 2009 Share Posted September 14, 2009 I have had quite a few birds from Cotswold chickens and get a lot of supplies from them, they are very good, the chickens are bright and healthy and the staff are very helpful and handle the birds carefully and correctly too which sadly you don't find at some places elsewhere! I also got some from http://www.northendhens.co.uk on a smaller scale but helpful friendly and lovely selection of chickens! not entirely sure where you are based though so may not be any help! We got 3 and gave £15 for the lot (donation), they lay and are fab, very friendly and are getting their feathers back nicely, also i'm happy to know they are having a fun retirement. hope you find some hens to suit. Now they are advertising £15, so bit of a hike.
