Cost of Chickens

Recommended Posts

I am shocked! I last got chickens nearly 2.5 years ago, 3 hybrids at 9 pound each (on offer and down from 12 pound at the time!). Looking again now, most hybrids birds seem to be 20 pound each, and pure breeds more than that!!:shock:

And I want 3 :silenced:

Crikey, you can tell chicken-keeping is popular now!

Hybrids are £12 locally to me.

I have seen them at £14 a little further south with a Columbine at £18.

I have found that pure breed vary greatly in price depending on age and source.

POL CLB from well know poultry centre £30 and local breeder £20. The local breeder will also sell CLB once off heat for £10 each whereas the poultry centre won`t sell before POL.

They aren't cheap now Clur, but I would rather pay a bit more and know that they are from a reputable breeder than get cheaper ones.

Hope you find some breeds you like soon to get some friends for Dilys :D

Me too; am thinking about going back to Cotswold Chickens but not sure. Has anyone else got positive experiences with them?

We're getting the stuff to separate the run hopefully this week, and then looking to get the new chickens after that - possibly next Sunday or the weekend after. We don't want to leave Dilys alone too long, just weddings etc getting in the way at the moment!

Not worried about the breed, but will probably stick with hybrids. Just want to get some chooks that will hold their own with Dilys!

We got our 3 gingernut ranger chicks in March (now 6mths) free from my neices school as they were brought into the nursery for the class to see them hatch. The school was going to send them back to the farm if no-one took them home.

OH had always wanted some chickens so we were dropped into the deep end with them - so glad we did. :D

I have had quite a few birds from Cotswold chickens and get a lot of supplies from them, they are very good, the chickens are bright and healthy and the staff are very helpful and handle the birds carefully and correctly too which sadly you don't find at some places elsewhere!

The shop has expanded and sell lots of great things too

I've bought 4 from them and Matilda + Theodore are fine and healthy at the moment :D

They are £14 from there, so a good price too.

They had some !eggblue! a few weeks ago

Hi!

why not save money for you and save a hen from the chicken pie and get ex batts from BHWT or little hen rescue. We got 3 and gave £15 for the lot (donation), they lay and are fab, very friendly and are getting their feathers back nicely, also i'm happy to know they are having a fun retirement.

hope you find some hens to suit.

Clur is down to a sole hen following losing a girl, so needs to get new girls quickly so she wouldn't be able to wait for a rescue.
