Guest
there are loads of optical illusion type thingies out there, I know - many of them do the email rounds - but I haven't seen this one before... if you don't believe it - open it in photoshop (or equivalent - and check with the eyedropper tool - they ARE the same shade of grey!!) Guest
But they're not meant to be are they? And what effect does the shadow have then? There's no shadow on A, so the shadow apparently makes B lighter.
pianissimo
Actually they ARE meant to be the same shade. In equal light, square B is lighter; but once it has the shadow on it, it becomes darker (and in this case becomes as dark as square A). The fact that it LOOKS lighter is just your brain compensating for the shadow while maintaining the relative shading in your mind. It's very clever. feemcg
If you cover up everything but the line A is on and stare at it for a while, A becomes lighter. Similarly B appears darker when you have less to compare it with......well, it does to me!

The Dogmother
Graham took them off before he left the forum so we wouldn't still have them in the new year and no-one to take them off - he's thoughtful like that.
