Going bananas

Recommended Posts

Silly topic - but does anywhere know where one can buy a decent banana these days. Not one of the supermarkets I've brought from seem to sell something that isnt soft, black and falling a part. Yesterday I selected 6 from the shelf and 2 unpeeled themselves on the conveyor belt  I told the girl I wasnt going to buy them as they would be black by the time I get home. I love bananas and eat one at work every morning for energy and ES likes one for football energy. I am fed up of making banana cake and flapjacks.

Have the same problem. They're either really green or really soft, but Koojie is right, at least when they are green they ripen fairly quickly. We each have a banana a day at lunchtime and I tend to buy a pack of really green ones and just a couple of ripe ones for the next day. Doesn't always work out though, because sometimes we have lunch out. That's when the geese get lucky!

I can only eat half a banana otherwise I feel sick - bit strange me  so I always but the tiny kid sized ones 8)

No, not strange at all Lewis - I'm the same, somehow a whole banana is too much! Although strangely if I mash it up and put it in a sandwich, it's ok.

Sorry - but for once I have to disagree with my fellow omleteers!

What is this obsession for green unripe bananas ?

Are eg green unripe strawberries also better than ripe ones ??

- or does this just apply to bananas ???

They are meant to be eaten RIPE (but not black which is over-ripe)

- there now, I've said it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bananas and other fruit continue to ripen while strawberries are the only fruit that doesn't ripen once picked. Green strawberries, not sure, but blackbirds like them like that!

If you get bananas while they are a little green they will ripen soon enough so can be eaten at their best, whereas when you buy ripe bananas they will be overripe far too quickly and you are left with a blackening mass only fit for cooking with (not too good if you are trying to lose weight and want to keep clear of cakes). Either way they make my tongue itch!
