True Margaret. Would mean long term seperate housing and then introductions in the cold weather. BBBBrrrrrrr

Go to the auction for a look, you might see another breed that interests you, come home and research them and buy in spring?

Or cancel your holiday!

Do go for reserach purposes but only when you are in a position to purchase just in case you do end up beinging something back

Be wary about buying something you feel sorry for (hunched up, quiet, tired looking) as you will bring it home and risk the health of your flock (like I did  )

Auctions buys need to be quarantined for a couple of weeks after purchase as these auctions often contain birds somewhat below par health-wise, I have never been to an auction and not seen at least one very very sick looking bird and they may infect healthy birds in the same auction

If you do go and purchase something then ensure that your holiday helper can cope with an ill hen just in case

Also do research the auction itself, there is a regular one in Melton Mobray that I wouldnt go to, Salisbury is very good and is once a month as are a few others around the country

The best auctions of all are the ones that are only run a few times a year, even better if they are for graded birds as you know what you are getting is the right type/sex/size/age

prices at Salisbury were quite high this month, as a rule anything worth buying will generate a high-ish price often much more than 'retail' especially if two people want something badly enough, there are bargains to be had sometimes if birds are poorly presented, in the wrong section or there are several lots of the same thing in the auction, plain colour birds (black, buff) in general command lower prices compared to the fashionable colours like partridge or Millefleur even if they are better quality

Finally look out for the stealth cockerels!! young cockerels in with older hens so they look the same comb-wise or those with an egg in the pen with them

No Hubby HATES them :x:x

Think he is very jealous, when it was just 2 in the eglu as decided was fine .

But £1800.00 later lots of weekends building WIR puting anti rat devices involving lots of digging and concreat and mesh. (he did enjoy the shooting of them though) new decking to run door and new fencing to protect some of garden !!!!

And when I get home from work at 6pm I have to go straight out for an hour with them before it gets dark :lol::boohoo:

So dont think will get some new Girlies as a suprise unless on a plate.

Will just go by myself and get some ideas.

I'm sorry to hear that :( My OH Sally bought her 2, and then I moved in, and I think I spend more time with them and building stuff for them than she does lol don't get me wrong she loves them both dearly and would do anything for them, but I fear I've become a bit of a chicken addict, I'd gladly have another two, and am currently re-arranging the garden to give them a designated dust bath and build a perch system for them. And securing the garden and building a fence and gate to ensure no escape attempts. lol

I don't understand how anyone can hate chickens... I can understand not being a fan or being indifferent, I don't think that everyone should LOVE them, but HATE??? they're adorable.

I've got my hat & got my coat I'm heading out the door, but my purse is empty I'm observing from afar, admiring & wishful thinking but I'm not participating :)

Any other Omleteeers going, give me a little wave I'll be the one in the corner - empty handed :)

8) That's what I call dedication. Sounds sensible to wait, but we are not always sensible are we! :) Good luck sweetie  Maybe a few hugs and kisses would get you OH on your side. :D expensive things chooks. we put fencing round our veggies to stop the hens from getting in when we weren't around. Then felt so sorry for them pacing up and down the fence we have the door open permanently and put chicken wire around the newly planted seeds. Mad or what! thankfully we are both crazy :D

Haaa Margaret you & my Hubby!!! He said exactly the same, I thought they were like the Abominal ( not sure how to spell that ha ha ) big foot type chicken, they made me laugh soo much. .. but he really didnt like them. There were some beauoootiful birds, some gorgeous cockerals one in particular, quite small but the reds & auburns in the plumage were so vibrant - stunning guy!!

will watch out for more would like to go again.

Ha my hubby also said we missed out there - we could've taken our wee flock & sold them !!!! HMMMMMM bought some younger ones that actually lay!!! Tee heee some of ours are just ornamental ;) don't earn their keep at all
