Chick crumb to growers or layers?

Recommended Posts

I found this on line somewhere a while ago -

From hatch to 8 weeks of age: Chick Crumbs.

From 8 to 18 weeks of age: Growers Pellets or Mash.

From 18 weeks of age: Layers Pellets or Mash.

I think that 'growers' feed has more calcium and protein for good bones growth.

My feed place sells A&P by the scoop so I can buy what I need of crumb, gorwers and layers but as you are not local I spose that isn`t very useful to you :roll:

You can buy growers mash which you could mix in with the crumb so it isn`t such a big change. I have only ever seen growers mash from Marriages and Garvo (LOVE IT!).

If it were me I would buy a small bag of crumb and a sack of growers and mix the two, reducing the crumb % every few days.

I have kept my pure breeds on growers until 24 weeks+ as I was told by ex FIL that they benefit from the extra goodieness and as I have not seen an egg from any of my PB until a good few weeks after 24w I took his advice.

Is you Orp LF or a mini? :D

Thanks Em, my orp is a mini, i love her, shes gorgeous :D

Im going to my feed place soon and hopefully they might sell the crumb by the scoop, if not i will just get both and change over slowly. Strangely, when it comes to my babies, money doesnt seem to be an object ! so what if we're on beans on toast for the week

Hi

First post on here - love the forum by the way (once I managed to find my way around).

I have got loads of chicks with mums that range from 8-12 weeks that are currently on Garvo growers mash. Today I let them all range with the big girls but didn't think about the layers mash down in the big girls side - will it matter if the chicks eat some of the layers mash?

Oooh hello! I recognise that name! Glad you came to join us...told you we were all nuts! :D

I don`t think a little layers will hurt but I have read that access to layers in quantity too early could be the cause of early prolapse and premature laying etc.

My banties are all on growers at the mo as mid intros........the garvo ( ) has really helped the older girls put on some condition and had no issues with the eggs from the older girls.....well the two that are laying...the other four are in Broody camp

Hi Em thanks for your reply.

Think I will put them all back on growers for a while.

The big girls have been on a growers/layers mix anyway to try and help them with their moult - it seems to be doing the trick :)

On another note - caught your bug - found a couple of Frizzles today & whilst there also picked up 2 Brahma bantams
