If you want to completely wipe your HD, use Dariks Boot and Nuke, also calleg DBAN. It will wipe everything off your drive. The US Department of Defense, use it to wipe their computers.

Make sure you make a back-up of the files you want to save...... Once started DBAN wll erase everything and I do mean everything.......

That's right, the only way to totally destroy any traces of files, sites visited/material downloaded is to beat the HDD to pieces with a hammer then burn it!

....which, even then, isn't infallible. I've seen surprising numbers of intact files recovered from a fried hard disc by professional data recovery companies. Burning a disc will damage the platters inside that hold the data, but it's unlikely to completely destroy every byte on all of them, so it will still leave something in a recoverable state.

In fact, the safest practical method is to employ a data recovery company to wipe the disc for you, although that carries an expense.

Used AVG free for years here, brothers job is computer forensics and he swears by it :D

I use AVG on the advice of a friend who is in exactly the same job  I also have K9 parental control for Rosie's profile.

Lewis, I'd recommend that you also use Lavasoft's Adaware (also free) as it gets rid of all those keyloggers which can steal your passwords.

Uni have some thing on here 'cos if you use the same password as any of your Uni passwords for any other purpose, it'll lock you out of all Uni stuff and you need to go + see them to get it changed

Will have a look though :D

Ta :D

I have just downloaded a more up to date version of AVG and run a whole computer scan. It says that there are 6 infections that are too big to remove or quarantine. Help!! What do I do?? And does that explain why my debit card details keep getting hijacked (this last time someone in Chile was trying to spent £600 of mine!! ). Apparantly I have 6 Trojans.

AND the latest AVG seems to have locked me out of the Omlet quiz! :eh:

My computer search for something brought in trojans last week and the antivirus picked it up but there were shortcuts already put on the desktop to porntube!! - my daughter was very quick thinking and removed me from the wireless connection and the internet very quickly and brought me in a spyware programme from a fellow computer buff to get rid of them - they took ages to get rid of but its fine now and all healed and sorted - nightmare at the time though!
