Peachy77
We gingernut ranger is going through her 1st big moult. We got her a POL last June. She is feeling really sorry for herself, fluffing herself up, hunched a lot of the time etc. How long does this last for and is it normal with a moult? She has been sneezing a little to. CluckyBucks
Hello there I think it varies with breed. My silkie has been moulting for a few months, maybe its a 1st moult thing xx xx
Sarahsausage
Are you sure she's just moulting, chickens don't usually looked depressed and hunched when they're moulting, they just get on with their daily doings and shed feathers everywhere! Is she eggbound? They can looked very depressed, fluffed up and hunched when they're eggbound.
Jools
I always seem to be disagreeing but they can look pretty fed up and miserable when moulting. Some of mine sail through without a problem, others have a few weeks of hunched up misery, poor things.
Peachy77
Thank you for your replies. I know she is definately moulting, as when i picked her up earlier, she flapped away and there must have been 30 feathers all come out, and every time she moves she has more come off. Didnt know if the feeling sorry for herself bit was part of the moulting or something to worry about. She has never been the most reliable for egg laying, and is a very small bird. Cant see or feel anything obvious. How would i know if she was eggbound? Wormed last week, been having some poultry tonic, and got some poultry spice yesterday. The place we got one of our other chickens from said that they can get very low when moulting as its a huge shock to the system. Hopeing its just the moult. Any other advice to help her on the way. Leicester_H
We gingernut ranger is going through her 1st big moult. Same here. She looks half her normal size. Is still VERY active though. One egg in 2 weeks - actually didn't expect any until next spring from her. H
Chicken Shirl
Three of mine are moulting, they are not under the weather but it has affected their demeanour, they are all a bit tetchy with the others. I am giving them extra protein in the form of mealworms, hard boiled eggs and tuna fish as well as citricidal in their water....Hope this helps you, and that your girl will be feeling better soon. MadMitch
All mine are moulting as well but my pheasant fowl is well miserable and depressed, she is fine as far as eating etc. goes but she is keeping to herself and spends most of the time sat under a shelf in the run looking gloomy, she also likes to sleep by herself and goes in a seperate eglu on a night, although I always turf her out and put her with the others. Peachy77
Noticed today that one of the others is moulting today to, but she is fine. The ranger is the smallest and always seems to be the one thats gets everything if you know what i mean. So wouldnt surprise me if she gets a little depressed about the whole thing. She laid an egg today to.
