Lynn
I have been asked by the youngest son of my boss about the anatomy of a cockerel. Firstly he wanted to know how they wee and then he asked about how the eggs get fertilised. (I've put that as politely as I can!!!) I realised at this point that whilst I knew a number of things about hens, I didn't know much about cockerals I've seen the link through to the anatomy of a chicken but it doesn't explain about all the boy "bits" (if you know what I mean) The boy in question is aged 10, so VERY inquisitive Any help much appreciated. Griffin
This is a subject that interests Boris greatly and he tried to take in as much as possible on his last visit to the vets
Falkor
I have asked Shiou, my two year old Japanese hen who recently left her husband and she says that she is a lady and does not discuss such things! Koshou on the other hand was Shiou's husbands younger bit on the side and she disclosed full details which I am afraid are not suitable for a family forum. I also have 18 "pure" hens that are currently all standing in the garden noticably shell shocked from her very descriptive trip down memory lane! Lynn
Some girls just kiss and tell!!! Thank you all very much for enlightening information - I have dispatched a link to the website and also sent the very cute picture of Boris to my boss - hopefully that will distract her son from asking too many more questions. It's a times like this I'm thankful I don't have children who ask such embarrasing questions!
The Dogmother
Somewhere I have a photo of it all laid out from when I last gutted one.. I'll let you know if I find it. I always feed the heart and gonads to the dog, keep the liver for us though.
Redwing
Oh yes, if you gut a bird you will be frankly astonished at the size of the wotsits, they are HUGE

Lewis
Somewhere I have a photo of it all laid out from when I last gutted one.. I'll let you know if I find it. Lewis feels left out! I didn't notice anything when we gutted them before but I wasn't looking for any they were probably a bit young? (Another reason to add to the Why Lewis Must Get Dinner Chickens List to give to mother )

craftyhunnypie
I've always wondered how exactly the deed is done. How can I ask what I want here? Ok, do they sort of spray something on quickly or do they have to go inside? Hope that's an ok way of asking? Emma.x

Redwing
Emma, the liquid is deposited on the vent edge and the hen draws it inside using muscle contractions Thats why fluffies such as silkies/opps/cochins etc.. sometimes have lower incidence of fertle eggs and both chooks need a bottom trim to ensure that contact is made
craftyhunnypie
Thank you - that is roughly what my hubby thought - although he didn't put it so politely! Emma.x
