random laundry-induced thoughts

6 humans in the family... that's 12 feet...

That's 12 socks, in one day...

That's 84 socks in a week... except that I don't usually wear socks, so that's really only 70 socks in the wash each week... but then there are the riding socks, the hockey socks, and various other 'event socks'...

Conclusion of thinking : with 5 cats, 3 chooks, 3 bunnies, 1 dog and 1 hedgehog, one shall rejoice that humans wear socks, but animals do not...

DH seems to get through a remarkable number of socks each week. I get through the expected 14 socks, plus the occasional walking socks or welly socks, and ski socks if I go to the Snowdome.

A few years ago his Mum used to visit and ironed his socks and now he wants them all ironed as well! 'Fraid I put my foot down (pardon the pun) over that.

I now do all the socks on their own in one wash with no other clothing at all in the machine

Hubby has several hundred pairs luckily

I do that big wash of just socks once a month (because of the quantity needed to make a load) - the normal washing is done every couple of days - I am not a slob! I just find that keeping all the socks in one place and washing them at the same time minimises socks going missing, being missed with the rest of the washing, getting dropped, ending up down the back of the machine etc..

I dont put socks on the line as they take a peg each and I am mean with my pegs  so all the socks go from the machine to one clothes horse and are paired and put away when dry and the whole thing starts again

Luckily OH doesnt have very pongy feet

Just re-read that and I sound deranged

I am with Egluntyne. Small black socks for my 5 year old, big black socks for the OH and white socks for my seven year old!

That sounds like a great way of doing things, except that for school, all daughters need ankle navy socks and ankle white socks, and while DD2 and DD3 fall into the same size band, DD1 needs a bigger sock, and there are still times when in a hurry I mismatch them, or mismatch newer pairs with older, slightly different length ones, and one daughter comes down in the morning with socks obviously reaching different heights on her legs  .

Black socks for school (x3 pairs per day)

White socks for PE (x6 pairs per week)

OH's 'day' socks (x7 per week)

OH's 'cycle too and from work' socks (x5 per week)

Hockey training socks (x4 pairs per week)

Match socks (x2 or 3 per week)

DD's 'goin out wiv ma mates' socks (x3ish per week)

DD's working at the stables socks - v warm (x1 per week)

I'd never thought about it before - that is quite scary really :anxious:

I tend to wander around the house barefoot most of the time...

I pair socks before putting them in the machine then check them into pairs when they come out. Works for me :D

However...OH has recently bought new black work socks from M&S, same brand, style etc but they're not the same. We checked the packaging and they're made in 2 different countries. So they're not the same black. Honest  So his just get dumped back in his drawer. All others are paired when dry and returned to their owners.

I've had to write the boys initials in their white sports socks as I can't tell them apart and neither can they

We found exactly the same... OH's socks are all black socks from M&S but the different batches are not exactly the same!!

I never thought a thread about socks in the laundry would reach 2 pages  , seems I've hit something deep in personal in all our domestic lives :D:D

I have a section on one side of a shelf in the airing cupboard for odd socks and there are some that have been there for months, every now and then I have a sort out and give in and throw them out, of course then the other one appears from somewhere mysterious

I am always amazed by the number of socks in this house, and my OH and daughters have a habit of kicking them off around the place and there seem to be socks everywhere

I just buy black socks for my menfolk. If one gets lost, it doesn't matter, I don't have to spend hours trying to match it up.

Same here - Carl has black socks with a faint strip around the top and mine are plain black. I don't think the Sock Monster has ever visited me - we always seem to have pairs when they are dry :D

I mostly wear Crocs and have bare feet......even through winter.

The Eater of Socks definitely visits us! There are only two of us, but we do have outdoor socks, indoor socks, smarter socks, thin socks, etc,etc etc. I mentioned this to one of my daughters once and she bought me some very clever little clips so that all the socks can be paired and clipped together before they go in the wash. I tried very hard to use them but unfortunately, as I always seem to be in a hurry when I am filling up the washing machine I got a little fedup with doing it. Consequently, we still have missing sock days. Have to say though, normally they turn up at some stage so the Eater of Socks must regurgitate them and hide them in places like up a shirt sleeve or stuck in a corner of a pillow case or a fitted sheet..... :D
