Raina
Hi all, My mum said i can have a if i ask What are the pro's & con's of the cube?
Chunky_Monkey
Pros Don't have to bend down to clean the cube. The door is big so you can get inside quite easily. Lots of space for more chooks Cons The price. The run space - for our 8 chickens we've had to get 3 extensions as well as the normal run. Hope this helps a bit
Falkor
In addition to the above; Pros *On wheels so can be moved *Run height means you can get in and walk (a little bent over) rather than having to crawl about *Run height means that perches and different levels can be added to create interest for the chooks * nestbox is bigger to allow more chooks to lay than in the eglu * footprint of the cube is not that much bigger than the eglu *more chooks Cons *You need to be able to access ALL sides of the cube and run. - front - Run door, back - poop trays, left - door handle, right - nesting box * the vent in the nestbox means that if you use aubiose it falls out * nestbox would not accomodate the ten chooks that the cube can hold (unless they were very polite and patient chooks which my six most def are not) * It is bigger therefore takes longer to clean * more chooks - more poo! Space Chick
I echo what has already been said, particularly on run space, I built a WIR as the standard run was tight with 4. With regard to the vent in the nest box, I have "covered" this with a flexible chopping board, stopping the hemcore falling out. The comments on more chooks, I have 12 sleeping in my cube, and there is still room to spare (I have 2 larger ladies, and 3 smallish girls, the rest are standard sized large fowl), however, I do have to clean out the poo trays twice a week as they don't half create a lot of poo The nestbox is big enough for 3 to share, however, some girls are not prepared to share so I have put an additional nesting box in the WIR (which Polly flatly refuses to use ) Good luck

And debs...you have never met my orps have you......it is a squeeze in the nest box with two and really quite comical when the third tries to get in there too! Gin and OSH will be in there having a natter whilst they lay when the clumsy buxom lass that is Brandy trips over the nest box divider and falls in head first Then once she is the right way up again she spends twenty mins trying to get herself settled in the middle. I swear all their chuntering is "ooh excuse me...if I could just put my leg there and you put your wing here...then if we shuffle down a bit...now Gin you breath in whilst I slide......" The Dogmother
I didn't like the styling of the cube from the moment I saw the prototype; I thought that it looked like the back end of a Reliant Robin! But from a practical point of view, it's marvellous - easy to clean, larger and the run access door is much larger too. I love my cube, but still don't think the styling is anywhere as nice as the Eglu classic.

We was going to use our old caravan as a coop and build a WIR around it but changed our minds after redwings post. So it looks like we're going to get a cube,it's going to take forever to save up though,i have £230 but that's taken a year to save up

chelsea
I love my cube, but still don't think the styling is anywhere as nice as the Eglu classic. I completely agree. The cube serves it purpose for me as a fantastic, warm, easy to clean chicken house. It is however very cumbersome and large - so make sure you have plenty of room for manouvre/accessibility. docsquid
I'd go along with that - it isn't as stylish, but it is extremely practical and still does look nice in the garden. I have very bad knees (a result of skiing too much and breaking various bones and tendons) and having to kneel down is not good so the fact that the Cube is raised makes it much easier to clean and the run much easier to rake out. The main con is having to get to both sides of it. Everybody who has seen mine and who has experience of wooden hen houses is very impressed. chick wiggle
Well, I m sorry peeps but Im gonna dissagree with most of your comments I love the look of the cube, its so cool and funky (sorry Raina but purple is best ) I find the cube much easier to clean than the eglu, now, that may be because you dont have to bend down but I find it easier all round. I have 11 chooks in mine, and yes space chick thats a lot of poop! and just to be able to whip out the trays, empty and put back in makes life very easy, that and the fact that the roof slides forward and the back comes off - poo cleaning heaven how sad am I?........... answers on a postcard only please! Keep saving up Raina, its worth it
The Dogmother
I know of four people with wooden coops, who have seen my cube and bought one to replace their wooden housing.

Jools
Dare I admit that I turned down a bargain Cube recently However, there's a member here who's pretty pleased I did because my Uncle sold it to her at a knock down price instead. no1smiles2000
well i love my cube, althought i have no experience of anything else!haha Pros: Easy to clean Good size I like the look & colour all the way! Cons Expensive - was lucky to be treated by dad for wedding present! Run isnt big enough for 4 - even feel mean with the extension as well! Would be good if a little higher so could crouch in the run the door! its awful, i can hardly reach in to change the food/ water. Would recomend they change this! A side one would be much better So i do love it even with its faults! Much better than a wooden one & will hopefully last forever!

A side one would be much better Have you got the old small door? The new one is much better - I can get in and walk around, albeit a bit bent over, with ease, and easily reach to fiddle with the feeders/drinkers. Slim
I love my wood coop it is easy to clean as it has a sliding tray I think it looks nicer in the garden, I don't like the way the cube is off the ground but do understand why they have done it and i don't like the plastic look in the garden would be nice if they did a dark green version or brown version so it blends in better. I do like the plastic for cleaning.
