debbier
Having nearly fallen into the vegetable patch on the way to check out my new chooks when my torch gave up the ghost (and it was naff anyway) I've decided I need a new torch. There are so many types out there these days: leds, maglites, windable...you name it. So, does anyone have any recs for a good, bright torch that would avoid me falling over on the way down the garden? I have a small, bright pen type light, which works fine for messing around on the back of the pc, but doesn't cut it when trying to avoid obstacles in the pitch black outside, so I'm after a bright one with a wide angle, I think. Guest
we like the wind up ones, bright enough for camping and/or chook checking and you never have to worry about batteries
Old Speckled Hen
Cotswold do a wind up head torch for a tenner https://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/webpoint/webpoint.cfm?bhcp=1&FUSEACTION=main&SHOWMESSAGE=0&GOTOLOCATION=0&MENUSTATE=N&originalReferrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ecotswoldoutdoor%2Ecom%2F#app=7491&2919-selectedMenuVsIndex=0&2919-idGroup2=-1&2919-selectedMenuAccIndex=0&2919-tag=false&2919-group1=Search%3A%20torch&2919-selectedMenuLstIndex=-1&2919-selectedMenuLstIndex2=-1&2919-selectedMenuLstIndex3=-1&2919-idGroup1=-1&2919-selectedIndex=5&2919-idBrand=-1&2919-group2=&2919-counter=2 Looks a bit clunky to me though. A neat LED with just the one head band gets my vote too Sorry the link just takes you to cotswold's home page but just search "torch" and it's on the first page. It's on BOGOFF too
Valkyrie
OH was whingeing about the lantern we have - we can't see the ground very well when we walk with it. Otherwise it's bright enough for being in a room in a powercut - or when the fuses go. I think you have just sorted out OH's Christmas pressie for me BarbaraJ - thanks for that - and Debbier thanks for asking that question. Falkor
I have a rechargable latern for going out to the girls as it spreads the light rather than aiming it. No need to worry about batteries either. I also have a head torch for the late night hands on chicken work. OH says he is installing a light in the WIR but I will believe it when I see it. The Dogmother
I have an LED wind-up head torch from Milletts - it's brilliant. http://nextday.diy.com/app/jsp/product/productPage.jsp?productId=34887this one? you should have seen all the men ooing and aahing over it, in B&Q the other day I used to have one of those - very bright indeed, but the battery can only be recharged a limited number of times, and then the unit has to be safely disposed of at the dump as the battery is classed as hazardous waste

Redwing
I bought a torch from Tesco, it is the larger type of torch similar in shape to the one Barbara posted but runs on standard batteries The torch was about £5 and the batteries another £4 but its ace, I accidently left it on all night in the rain a few days back and it still works fine (on the same batteries!) I tip mine and place it on its front on the top of the chicken runs and it disperses light like a light bulb, very impressive When walking with it you can see a long way ahead, when I go to the stables in the dark my cockerel starts crowing when he sees light as I reach the gate and I am still 100m away! The battery has gone then - it's like a value version of a car battery - in fact you can even hear it fizzing when you charge it. But it can only be charged a limited number of times. I bought one and thought it great until The Boy told me about the battery limitations
