Griffin
Tomorrow, lovely Mr Griffin will be collecting two new girls for me on his way home from work Ever since I saw a photo of a Modern Game I've always wanted one. When I first saw one I couldn't stop looking at it, I couldn't decide if it was stunningly beautiful or the ugliest bird I've ever seen I soon decided it was stunning, absolutely fascinating and I dreamed of having one. Well now I'm getting two Two Gold Birchen pullets were advertised on another forum and after much deliberation (30 seconds or so) I enquired about them. I haven't a clue what to call them, they need elegant ladylike names. Help please!

laurmurf
Oh Griffin - you amazingly lucky thing! they are the most beautiful birds ever...pure swoon-worthy! Modern Game are my most passionate desires - even more than naked necks (don't tell Dru). I joined the Modern Game club just last week (their secretary Jennifer is so lovely and welcoming, didn't mind me joining even though I haven't got any!) But sadly my passion is for the LF modern game. I am not convinced that they would live happily in a cube, so I'm denying myself. saying that, I've already written to not one but TWO members of the club enquiring about fertile eggs for LF Modern Game in the springtime..... Just asking, you know....
Griffin
Ooooo what colour were you thinking of? I really like the look of the black, that was the first I ever saw. Gold Birchen comes a close second He's got two Silver Birchens too and asked if I wanted those aswell but in a rare moment of sensibility I declined Apparently they spent most of the summer nesting and roosting in a tree but are in a coop now the weather has deteriorated. One of mine spent most of the summer on the roof of her coop so I expect she'll be grateful of company next year
laurmurf
so are they free ranging bantams then? Gosh! Will you free range them once they're settled? I really liked the bantams but presumed they couldn't free range or they'd be off.... Mind you, i thought the same thing about my sebright but I was told that Temple Newsam has free ranging sebrights (they hang around with the light sussex chooks - about 4x their size!) I love the birchens in bantam size but the Black Red and the Wheatens are my favourites in LF. I saw the bantams for the first time at the Fed last year and although I'd read about the LF, I didn't see any 'in real life' until the summer. I was visiting a farm for a sheepdog trial and was suddenly surrounded by a huge flock of free ranging large fowl Modern Game: you could have knocked me down with a feather! I then spent about two hours talking chooks with the farmer: she'd never had anyone turn up who knew what they were . In this case "a rare moment of sensibility" hit me too, when she offered me a dozen fertile eggs. I've regretted being sensible ever since . I'm hoping she's going to be at the National or the Fed and I intend to corner her! Prudence can just stay locked up in Tasha's shed as far as I'm concerned because I lost out big time to that cow! http://website.lineone.net/~alanhiggs/mgcindex.htm - here's the website for the club, if you're interested (i am using their artwork as my desktop and I ordered a pin... how sad am i? ) Edited November 25, 2009 by Guest
Griffin
They're not bantam, they LF They've been used to free ranging with a large flock of other chickens so this should be home from home for them. I'll let you know how we get on

Tutti Frutti
Wow, what amazing chickens ! They remind me of Can Can dancers! So names along the Moulin Rouge theme, you could have Satine? Or here's another ballet dancer - Darcy Very impressed. Somehow, I think I need bigger chookie accommodation...

Griffin
OH MY GIDDY AUNT!!!!!!!!!!!! I am the luckiest woman alive! Mr Griffin is home, I opened the box and there were 3 in there! He's only gone and bought me the Silver Birchen pullet too because they both agreed she shouldn't be left on her own!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'VE GOT THREE BEAUTIFUL MODERN GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I burst into tears I've had lots of cuddles with my new girls and I've reluctantly put them to bed outside. Of course I'll have to check on them several times before I go to bed just to admire them again They are so beautiful, more beautiful than I could ever imagine. I spend far too much time outside with my chooks as it is and I can't imagine I'll spend any time at all in the house tomorrow Daisy has named them Stacey, Nessa and Gwen in honour of the return of Gavin & Stacey tonight Emily doesn't understand why we'll not call one Gavin though
