Raina
Well i think that's what it's called lol. I'm hoping to get my girls back in a couple of days (boy have i missed them lol) But because our house had been abandoned before we got it some of the neighbours had taken most of the paving slabs in our garden and just left soil and about 1 inch under the soil is loads of that sandy stuff you use for paving slabs. Is it OK for my girls to go on this or do we need to wait and put some slabs down? Thanks
Macfoy
Yes, they will be fine. I expect they'll love it because they will be able to sratch through it and dig you big holes Macfoy

Space Chick
Sorry Raina but if it is builders sand, that is not recommended as it is too harsh for chickens. See this thread below: http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=54428&hilit=builders+sand Is there another spot you could put them for now Raina? Egluntyne
I'm going against the grain and suggesting that if it is proper builders sand, then it will be too harsh for them. Can you dig it out?
The Dogmother
As the others have said, sharp sand may be too co"Ooops, word censored!". I have some fine paving sand though and they love that in their dustbath.
Raina
Nope i can't dig it out. it's about 1 - 3 inches under some topsoil I was digging holes i parts of the garden today , and some parts had sand and others didn't. I did touch the sand and it felt like the childrens play sand from argos
The Dogmother
If it's soft play sand, then it'd be OK for the chooks, but not builders' sharp sand.
Dappy Chick
If it was under slabs then the chances are it is sharp sand which I do use for my chooks and they love it (please dont shoot me down) My concern would be the cement content in the sand (if any). There are many different methods for laying slabs and some people mix cement with the sand and plonk the slabs on top and some people just lay them straight onto sharp sand. Do you know how long ago the slabs were laid?
Raina
Nope, we only moved to the house in September so not sure when it was put down. Would putting some tarpaulin on the ground with hemp work?
