welovemarmite
As its cold i have been making chicken porridge for my chooks but they don't seem to like it. Am I doing something wrong or are they just fussy hens... They have a little bit and then give up. I use layers pellets/mash oats suet corn sultanas oil warm water
C&T
I wouldn't add suet or oil... Try adding some peas or other green veg (cabbage, broccolli, or whatever they like). The green then might help them learn porridge is good stuff!
debbier
Can I give them any left over porridge oats (made with half milk, half water + oats, no salt or sugar)?
C&T
I didn't think Dairy was a good idea?? But somebody who knows more than me can confirm or deny!
debbier
I wasn't sure, but yoghourt is often seen as a recommendation?
Redwing
I wouldnt give dairy as a rule but if you have an ill chicken then for a short period I guess it would be fine Cod liver oil is a good winter supplement and is fine to give Suet is a bad idea as already stated I made up two large dogs bowls of porridge this morning and dished it around all the chickens, they loved it! The Dogmother
Me too Tasha, mine love it when the weather is really cold. I use the porridge to make sure that they get all the goodies they normally leave at the bottom of the feeder.
Toots
as its time for worming again id it ok to mix flubvent sp? with the warm porridge? the heat wont make it less effective will it?
The Dogmother
There's currently a debate about that... Janssen (Flubenvet) recommend dosing as prescribed in pellets for 7 days, although their rep at The National gave out conflicting advice. I'd contact them to be sure. Plum
I use pellets already dosed with flubenvet to make up the porridge to ensure they still get the same dose.
docsquid
I'd say that as long as you don't heat it above body temperature (which for chickens is about 39 degrees Celsius, not 37 as for humans), then it will be OK - it has to survive in the gut of the chickens to work at this temperature. That's pretty warm! I do only use hand-warm water, not hot water, to make the porridge. I premixed the corn and crumb with Flubenvet in the correct dose then made their porridge from that. whoopsie
Can I just mix up porridge oats and warm water? That way I don't have to go out and get the pellets first!
