dippy bird
Hi, I have just been stuck at the end of my lane for 45 minutes behind a fire engine and ambulance because a man has jumped into a small lake by me to save his dog. I don't think the guy could have drowned as I dont actually think the lake is very deep, but it has been iced over so I am guessing the dog may have gone through the ice and got stuck I am guessing the guy may have got hyperthermia. I hope he is ok, his dog seemed fine. Just a shame he hadn't kept him on a lead, then this could have been avoided.
SarahJo
Hmmm - could see it being both - but explains why I heard the sirens when out collecting the boys from a friends near the rugby club. Stupid is definately trying to get up the hill at the leisure centre though, as priory lane itself is a sheet of ice now Hope the man is ok - and maybe serves as a reminder for all us dog owners to be aware of the risks when walking in this weather
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
If he'd have swum in the lake every day, he would have been nicely acclimatised by now. I have friends who are STILL wild swimming in their trunks!
Redwing
Before I had my dog I would have said stupid but I have to say that in the drama and distress of the moment I think I would probably end up doing the same even though common sense says its a bad idea Dogs have a way of getting to you like that... Geoid
Very stupid, jumping in is the thing you should do as a last resort. Especially as it was frozen.

tom123
Like Tasha said, before we had a dog I would have said stupid however I have been chased by a large herd of bullocks across a field and over a stile because I was rescuing my dog
Scramble
I think both. Sometimes you have to be stupidly brave to do something like that...or bravely stupid I suppose.
Geoid
In fact, I don't think I would jump in if a person was drowning (in those circumstances), the lifeguard training kicking in here.
Couperwife
Like Tasha said, before we had a dog I would have said stupid however I have been chased by a large herd of bullocks across a field and over a stile because I was rescuing my dog this is the reason that cows attack people your dog can run a lot faster you, and the cows. you would have been better off getting out of the field, then calling the dog over to you. dogs are a lot tougher than we give them credit for (us being soft and all ) cathy x
Chucky Mama
I think definately stupid. In these situations the stories neary always read 'owner drowned - dog survived'. Apart from being there at the edge of the water to grab a scruff to help them out if the bank is too high I think that you will be of little help in the water if a dog is in trouble. I would never go in to help my dog and I love her to bits. - On the subject of ice I saw a man standing in the dark in the middle of a frozen lake last night - idiot. What people that do this kind of thing don't think of is that someone elses life may be put at risk trying to rescue them when it all goes pear shaped. Cooks
Its stupid, but I would have done the same Me too, no doubt about it. I love my dogs to bits and I would be there to help/protect them just like I would my children.
Geoid
I just read in the paper, two hunters went to save a dog on a frozen lake. 1 body has been found, the other person is missing, the dog was found nearby, unharmed.
chick wiggle
Its stupid, but I would have done the same Me too, no doubt about it. I love my dogs to bits and I would be there to help/protect them just like I would my children. absolutely! I would imagine in situations like this motherly/protective instincts kick in and logical thought just doesn't apply
C&T
Its stupid, but I would have done the same Me too, no doubt about it. I love my dogs to bits and I would be there to help/protect them just like I would my children. absolutely! I would imagine in situations like this motherly/protective instincts kick in and logical thought just doesn't apply But without being unsympathetic to any dog, if you end up dead, was it really worth it? My very black and white view - if it's me or the dog, I win.
Cinnamon
I agree C&T - no animal is worth my life My children I would willingly perish for,but not an animal.
Space Chick
I appreciate both of your viewpoints C&T and Cinnamon, however, I haven't got and can't have children, and my pets are my babies. The maternal instinct that comes from me for my animals is unbelievable. I would happily risk my life to save anyone I loved whether they be human, canine, feline or avian
Cinnamon
Yes,if you don't have children then I guess its different. But if you do,your love for them is just so huge that everything else sort of pales by comparison. There is Also a strong instinct to keep yourself safe so you can nurture them, which makes risk taking less likely Don't get me wrong,I love my cat,but the maternal instinct is enormous
Redwing
I love my dog but wouldnt rationally risk my life for him but like I said (and as someone else has picked up) in the heat of the moment I think I would do something stupid - its human nature to react rather than think sometimes In a perfect world it would be like the Famous Five and a handy ladder/rope/branch would be lying around

Cooks
I believe that I am responsible for keeping my dogs safe and therefore I would protect them no matter what it cost me.
Charlottechicken
I can understand why he jumped in, both brave and stupid in my opinion. I remember the old public information film about water and I believe the tag line was 'Reach, Throw, Wade or Row'.
