mel
Hi everyone I'm new to chicken keeping, having had my three for six months now, and have just replaced their original cheap wooden house with a lovely new cube. The heavy rain and cold weather really showed up the weak points of the wooden house and having the cube has been a joy over the past couple of weeks. The one thing I'm wondering is whether anyone has come up with a good way to stop the wood shavings I use in the nesting box from disappearing through the hole in the bottom? At the moment I line it with newspaper first, but my lot have a habit of sleeping in the next box and the paper doesn't survive all the shuffling about. Any help would be very welcome! Raina
Hi, I don't have a cube, but the same happens to my eglu when i put sawdust in it! Could you try covering the holes with Duct-Tape?
Plum
Sorry I use newspaper but I believe some vinyl would work
atsw
Someone, a while back, made a circle of plastic from a Milk Carton and had a heavy bolt and washer through the middle which held it in place by gravity, but which allowed it to be easily lifted out for cleaning. Redwing
In the case of the cube a strip and two or three bolts are needed
mel
Thanks for the good ideas, I think I'll try the strip of milk carton & bolt out. Cheers Mel

docsquid
I just use a bit of cardboard and replace it each time I replace the bedding. Seems to work pretty well, even though they are sleeping at least part of the time in the nest box.
