Nooooo! My 6 girlies are really fed up and miserable - they keep whimpering at me in a 'Mum, please make it stop' sort of way. They won't set foot outside of their run in it, and they are so depressed they didn't even touch their corn today.

Last night a good 4" of snow drifted into their run and covered the eglu & cube from the rear, they must have been freezing, poor things. The wind is now very icy and coming from the North, so I have moved the tarp round to that side today to try and protect them a bit better tonight. I have had quite enough of this snow and ice myself, it's at least a foot deep here, and it goes over the top of my wellies :(

Are mine the only ones who try to EA|T it? They LOVE snow!

"Ooh mum, who iced the garden just for us?"

It's been a battle of wits keeping them in the WIR today, they keep making a dash for it when I open the door. For the ex-barnies, it's like they're squeezing SO MUCH FUN out of life now that they're out of the barn that they don't want to waste a single minute of play time, even if it is C.C.C.C.COLD!

Hi all

this is my first post since we got our 8 ex batt girls in September (we were poultry virgins!!) although I have spent many hours on the forum squealing with laughter at some of the posts! And as many checking out whether I am doing the right things/why are they STILL moulting/are they happy? posts too! The help and advice is invaluable to us newbies!

Re SNOW!!! We (OH and me..in blizzards) have built a huge A frame style tent in the garden with a blanket on the ground inside as I have been fretting for the last three weeks about the poor girls running about with no shoes on in the snow and wind (we are in NE Scotland and have had snow and ice since mid December here!)

However, my fretting appears to be totally unnecessary..it seems that my girls are the hardy "chuck us a mealworm in the snow and we will dig it out" variety who seem very content as long as they get pellet porridge every few hours!

I read somewhere that you should apply Vaseline on their wattles and comb to protect them but is that applicable to hybrids? The combs are all very red ( not surprised!!) and look ok at the moment..

..and why is it when you try to clear the snow for them with a great big shovel, they are under your feet and not in the slightest bit wary of the tool of destruction being slewed around them!

Love reading these...keep em coming!

My girls hate the snow but like to eat it..... off my boots!!!

Oooh. Somebody else has red Crocs! I must tell DH. He thinks I am weird, but it is obviously quite normal to have red Crocs!:lol:

Of course its absolutely normal  What else would you wear on your feet?

I got some of those thermal fluffy insoles to pop inside them too, mmm lovely

Hi Loo, and welcome to the forum, hope your enjoying your girls, they soon have you hooked dont they?

Re; vaseline, some people use it, some people try to get it on then give up, some just dont bother at all. I think its a call you have to make depending on your own circumstances. We have quite a sheltered WIR so I havent bothered. I think if you see black spots on their combs, thats a sign of frostbite. But, having said that, it can just be a bruise too. :?

Id say just keep an eye on them and do what ever makes you feel best. I know, not clear cut is it, sorry.

Good luck and keep us informed how your getting on.

:D
