chickencam
I agree, my ED is at the same school and she has Reynaud's Syndrome which means her feet turn white in the cold as the blood supply retreats. She copes very well and knows how to rub them to get the circulation going, but she would be much more comfortable in walking boots and warm trousers. Cinnamon
it is an all girls school with no trouser option in the uniform Goodness, that is terribly old fashioned, isn't it? That said,my youngest still wears a skirt, but with thick thermal fleece lined leggings on,that look like black tights. She has sensible DM shoes too, although they are allowed boots while the weather is bad

TAJ
It is an old fashioned school which in some ways in nice but in this weather a little common sense should prevail. I do agree - if they hadn't thought about it and put nothing on the website that would be one thing, but actually thinking about it and then insisting on the skirts and school shoes seems really silly. My DD has problems with her feet and has to where corrective insoles so her school shoes are boys shoes anyway, so sensible. However the school bus drops them 2 miles from home - she will not carry walking boots around all day at school 'just in case' they are needed, but could have worn them (they are black anyway). Chook n Boo Mum
DS was delivered back to school yesterday afternoon by the friends who kindly scooped him up for the weekend as we weren't happy to travel over the South Downs to get to him......he's not overly impressed I bet!! DD's school is open, though the drive is being used as a oneway system with a double parked backlog at the bottom......it obviously hadn't occurred to them that staggering the arrival times would be a good idea .....I think they expected more children to stay home than did On a normal day the older children are dropped off up to half an hour earlier & collected 3/4 hour after the little ones, so why not now too............I can understand the later start time, but why not say 9am for years 3-6 & 10am for the younger ones .....they are blatantly terrified of the back lash from parents & withholding of fees if they aren't seen to be doing something even if it's not the best though out plan in the world......much better than last year's fiasco DD's in home clothes & wellies for outside & indoor shoes for lessons too...........much more sensible............though they did say no sports kit was to be taken in today (we took DD's as we had no internet this am & hadn't picked up that info, nor the one way drive so DH was ) I'd have thought having a tracksuit in school would be sensible for all the little darlings who go out & get soaked in snowball fights at break...... ubereglu
College was open today, just as well, as I had my AS maths exam this morning. It was mostly ok, I could do the whole of section A, but only half of B, as it was one of the hardest things I have ever seen, and I'd done all the practice papers we'd been given. PurpleTree
Dan's school was open again today, although it was quite a slippery walk to get there. Just had a look on the Council website to see if any school's are still closed, strangely they're all high schools that are shut, but they are open to Yrs 11, 12 & 13. All primary school's seem to be open.

All primary school's seem to be open. I think the issue is these schools have a wider catchment area and not all the school buses are running. DD bus is running, but missing out all the stops on hills and untreated roads - so only doing the one puckup and leaving parents to get them there if they can. Plus they have limited food available at school - hence they are only having yrs 10-13 in as they are the ones currently having to do external examinations. Valkyrie
I can only guess that ours are closed - I can hear laughing youngsters! Plus they mentioned the schools that were opening on the radio today and Hook wasn't among them. I'm surprised that Robert Mays didn't get a mention if they are opening for the older children, but I did see our neighbour's daughter being brought home - she's not in year 10 yet. Lesley
Jake's village Primary is open today - Lauren's Secondary is still closed. It has a large catchment areaa dn most of the children are bussed in. We're pleased as Lauren's still on crutches and wouldn't be able to go, so she's not missing anything that the others are doing. Chucky Mama
Good point. Our school set work for each year group on the school website to be completed on they days that they were closed. YS set out a work plan and every time I looked in on him he said that he was working well and all was fine. At 4pm we checked his work to find that he had done a page and a half of IT and visited 34 different websites - car racing mainly Needless to say that I now know how to block access to certain websites on a laptop (youtube etc) and he spend all day Saturday working. That would be my DS too! Luckily the school has been open on all but one day. They set work on their website for those who were snowed in and when DS suggested we were probably snowed in and shouldn't bother trying to get him to school, I said he would have to do the work on the website then...he went into school! School is open to all today and YS came home and said that those that didn't do the work set during the snow days have to do it as homework so he is a happy bunny

I hope that nationally everyone will have done badly, then the grade boundaries get lowered! Biology tomorrow, which I'm quietly confident about and Physics on Wednesday-which will be ok, providing I can answer all the questions in the time. sadietoo
My DS' school opened today for years 10 to 13 and he had to sit the AS Maths too...Physics and Chemistry later this week. School should be open to all years from tomorrow. Good luck to all of you taking exams at the moment - I know its very stressful in the circumstances, not having had a chance to go through any last minute worries with teachers, so will be thinking of you all! My colleague at work has a househusband and two children at Junior school and is very underimpressed with the flyer that came home with them today advising that school won't open until 9.30 am every day this week... to give the teachers a chance to get in..... More snow forecast for tomorrow..but let's hope this lot doesn't close the South of England again!!!
Chook n Boo Mum
More snow forecast for tomorrow..but let's hope this lot doesn't close the South of England again!!! I do hope not, we are going to take DS out of school this evening for supper as it's his birthday......I had a bit of a paddy last night when DH announced the forecast was more snow & suggested we didn't go.......the forecast for around here was far far worse than actually arrived at the weekend, the point I made to His Nibs, which he agreed with & then suggested that I organise a quick party Fingers crossed for a precipitation-free warmish evening please for West Sussex, at least until 10pm Sha x

Chucky Mama
We are closed today except for those sitting exams. Just as well as OH has pinched my 4 x 4 and left me with a Mini to get 3 kids to school if the buses weren't running.
Rhapsody
I am so cross the exams haven't been postponed, the roads around here are appauling, with abandoned cars blocking some routes completely! The school buses arent running and I think it is just unreasonable to carry on with exams as if everything were normal. My two are sitting A levels and GSCE's at the moment and getting them both in means a 3 hour round trip due to the conditions, these exams are important, their future at 6th form and uni count on sitting them. Its just disgraceful to put us under this kind of pressure. ETA: OH just rang- they are stuck trying to get Elder Son to his Physics Exam due to other cars stuck in snow! *cue slightly hysterical laughter*
TAJ
Our local radio stated DD school was closed 5 mins before we leave for the school bus, so we didn't try to get out to it - the school website then stated it was open BUT only 5 mins after the school bus departs! A bit late me thinks! Many schools around here are closed and only half her school buses are working anyway so many will be missing from classes anyway. Chook n Boo Mum
DD's school website had a message flag up just as DH was loading children into the car at 7.30 stating that the drive is dicey but passable, come at your own risk.............literally 5 mins later, after he'd left of course , a text came in school is closed, website not changed from "own risk"....DH didn't have his mobile on so I couldn't get the message to him ..........then an email pops up school closed for forseeable future.....website then changed to closed & reassess at 10.30.....I tried to ring school to say DH is on way, what is situation, got answerphone message, closed for foreseeable future with no option to leave a message .....by which time DH had arrived & been sent away by headmaster Just had another message on website they'll reassess at 10, though the comment about the work attached to the website suggests they will hunker down & keep kids away DH also said the carpark is a nightmare & for him to suggest we keep the children home, it must be really bad Hey ho, girls are at work with DH doing homework which had been set a day early & awaiting the 10am reassess & will then need to be collected by either myself or the other little one's dad who's doing a school run into his son's secondary school at 10.30......at least it's stopped snowing Stay warm & safe everyone Sha x
Busybird
DD and DS1's secondary school is closed today except for exam pupils who can get in safely (mine are too young for this). DS2's primary school is also closed. He could easily walk to school but teachers would have to drive and the roads are very unsafe. We had a heavy snowfall through the night on top of the several inches of compacted snow that hadn't cleared from last week when the schools were closed Wednesday and Thursday. OH has managed to get into work every day as he cycles to the station (4 miles through snow on a bike ) and catches a train which has been running on a reduced service timetable. He told me this morning that the main roads are treacherous so I am glad the schools are closed. DD and DS1 catch a public bus to school which I doubt is running. Looks like another day to spend snowman building and sledging
