craftyhunnypie
We are thinking about going Hong Kong. But where do you go? I've heard talk of Nathan Road, Mongkong, Kowloon, Victoria Harbour. I mean where do you stay to enjoy it all? We want to see the culture, technology, the shops / markets, citys, waterfront. Not too bothered about a beach so much - but if there's one in a decent place with lots to see & do then fair enough. I hope someone can help? Space Chick
When we went we stayed on Hong Kong Island and wished we stayed in Kowloon. Its much bigger than it looks on the maps!!!! Victoria Peak is a "must do" as is the Giant Buddha
chelsea
We loved Hong Kong and felt very safe there. We stayed on the island and much preferred it on the island. Our hotel was the mid range Excelsior which was very reasonably priced for the money and had a popular British bar in the basement (popular with locals and ex-pats). As already mentioned Victoria peak during the day and night time is a must. The Star Ferry - cheap and easy to use between Kowloon & the island. We did a lot of walking and exploring on our own, we also did "room only" at the hotel and found eating out cheap. We also did an organised trip around "Aberdeen" which is a fishing village onboard a junk You probably are already aware as you've been to Thailand that the humidity can be a bit too much to bear at times. craftyhunnypie
Thank you. Now we are very confused as to where to go Kowloon or Hong Kong Island? We need to do a lot of research on it - plenty of reading books etc. We are off to Egypt soon, but are planning going Hong Kong next year. Yes, the humidity can be unbelievable in Thailand - I agree. Worse at night, when you are walking about round the malls, markets & bars. But we handled it ok with lots of cold drinks & airy clothing - oh & air con on full blast. We are both technology mad, so have wanted to see Hong Kong for a very long time, plus Shanghai, Taiwan, Japan - blah blah. So many places. The world is your oyster as they say! What we like is that it is a teeny flight from Manchester to Heathrow, then one long flight from the U.K, no touch downs in the middle east & queueing for your customs / security checks in different countries that you touch down in. To get to Thailand we went on 3 flights each way. It was stressful. So whats it like weather wise February / March time in Hong Kong? Charlottechicken
A colleague went for a week in early December, she has been before and usually picks up, ahem, a designer handbag whilst there. They have a Disneyland now as well! I'll see her on Tuesday and will ask her advice on the best places to stay and visit. She seems to know all the best places to stay and visit
chelsea
Looks as though March can be pleasant with occasional fog/drizzle which may affect visability, so on some days you may not be able to get that fantastic view! http://www.myhongkongtravel.com/explore-hongkong/climate.html We went in September, very humid and prone to torrential downpours. (typhoon season) It's difficult to decide on island v mainland I suppose in Kowloon you do have that wonderful view over to Hong Kong island, but then again over on the island you're only a ferry ride away. Like you say Emma you're going to do plenty of research anyway. You will have a fabulous time wherever you stay!
sadietoo
I'd love to go to Hong Kong as my aunt and uncle were posted there in the dark ages, and sent me a postcard every week..I'm sure it's quite different 50 years later!!! Anyway....I've heard that the YMCA is the place to stay...but have no idea where it is in relation to the rest of Hong Kong!!..
craftyhunnypie
I don't want all things for 'kids' about, as I don't have any & I'm not that keen on them. So the Disney thing would not appeal at all. So we don't want a hotel with kids club & waterparks etc. Just nice adult luxury. The cruise ship on dry land fascinates me, as does the huge buddha - oh & the light show over the harbour looks beautiful. Night cruises, shopping, mandarin clothes, lovely food, hustley bustley atmosphere, gadgets & technology everywhere. Sounds like heaven!
