One of my orps( Closest) has now layed 9 eggs in nine days, all the eggs being perfect!

 

im not sure if she is a pure orpington as you can see both my orps look very different, i just thought shes laying an awful lot for an orp espically at this time of year and she has a few black feathers mainly around her back end.

 

its made me think this as the breeder we got her from gave us two cocks after seeming quite convinced they where hens and telling us they where alot older than what they turned out to be.

 

im just interested really as to what she is and to which of my orps is the purer one

They are both gorgeous. The one on the left does have a softer look, I would love to own either but that doesn't help with your question, sorry.

They do look very orp ish but its hard to get a good view of what they look like or their size

 

Breeders will often sell on chickens that arent show quality (the black feathers for example) so its not surprising to find that they dont meet the breed standard exactly

I had to do the right click thing to see anything. Are they are the same birds in the dustbath? They look a very different colour? The birds in the bath do really look like orps and if the other 2 are the same girls, then yes I would say they are orps but to be definitive we'd need a side on shot plus leg colour. One bird is more developed than the other and I presume she is the one that is laying? The black feathers are known as 'smuts' or 'smuttiness' and are a fault so the birds are no good for show but perfectly good as garden birds. If they were born say May/June then its not unusual for them to come into lay early.

My Buff orpie also started at the beginning of the year last year - she also went bonkers beautiful big ones - 2 in a day aswell! She became the best layer of them all until she went broody - watch out in February/March! Although she didn't have any black on her. She was quite slender and not as puffed out as other buff orpies though - and she was a pure-bred. Perhaps she didn't mature enough when she went.
