Cinnamon
I have been kindly given a brand new Windows 7 package, the most expensive one, from a friend who is a big shot at Microsoft At the moment my computer runs on XP, which I like, so is it feasible & worth it to change to Windows 7? And how do I know if my computer, which is about 4 years old,can run this new software with no problems? Any advice greatfully recieved
Geoid
If your happy with XP, then I wouldn't bother upgrading. Although it has a lot of improvements. To see if your computer can run it, download the upgrade advisor from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx
chickric
And how do I know if my computer, which is about 4 years old,can run this new software with no problems? Download the Windows Upgrade Advisor from here to check compatability. I upgraded my laptop from vista but only because it was a free upgrade, it has some nice little features and does seem to be more stable than vista but don't know about XP. Old Speckled Hen
I've helped my daughter (blind leading blind springs to mind ..... I have a Mac ) through this. If you're running XP it requires a full clean install so you'd have to reinstall all your applications too. The system requirements are • 1GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor • 1GB RAM (32-bit) / 2GB RAM (64-bit) • 16GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20GB (64-bit) • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver If you have a spare computer put it on that? That what I did. I have Tiger on the desk top and Snow Leopard on the laptop I have had a few niggly problems with the upgrade. A lot of people say wait 2 years for Microsoft to iron out the glitches
Griffin
Mr Griffin is a server engineer & analyst and he's installed it on this PC. When it starts up I get the choice of using XP or 7 and I've always chickened out and gone with XP I like the desktop which changes photos like a digital photo frame and I like the bit that tells me how cold it is outside That's as much as I know about it
AnnieP
I've got Vista, which I loathe. Nothing runs smoothly on it, including the upgrade checker (ha ha). I am seriously considering upgrading, but really resent having to fork out all that money on a laptop that I only bought a year ago! I would be interested to see if others think it would be worth my while too! Go for it Sarah, then let me know!

Cinnamon
Hmmmmmmmmmm, don't think I will bother. Several of my programes won't work,& even though I do do a clean sweep on the computer, knocking it back to factory settings, every so often, its not something I relish. I think I will wait until I need a new computer instead
docsquid
The general advice is to wait until they release SP1 or possibly even SP2 - by then it should work properly. I prefer XP and when I bought a new PC with Vista, we set up a dual boot on it. Normally I run XP but I have Vista installed in case there are any programs I want to run in future that won't support XP. I don't like flashy graphics and prefer a simple desktop, so Windows 7 doesn't offer me anything. I'd only upgrade if forced to as programs cease to support XP. Of course that is all irrelevant because I've had enough of PC's and my next computer will be a Mac!
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Let the geeks iron out the creases for six months, then weigh it up. I've got xp, but if I wanted the functionality and interfacing offered with 7, I'd just get a Mac. It's a rip off, but with more punchable TV adverts. 'Windows 7 was MY idea.' Cinnamon
Well at least all this has spurred me on to back up the 'puter this afternoon!
bluekarin
I would also say, that as you already have XP on your computer stick with it. Windows 7 is a complete new install, meaning you will probably have to re install all your other software, some of which might not be compatible. If you currently had say Vista on your pc, then I'd say go ahead and install Windows 7. My hubby is in IT and this has been his advice to all his customers. I for one, like XP and am not interested in upgrading for a looog time
Woodcat
hey I'm not sure i'd bother to upload it on an old computer but i looooooooove windows 7 i came directly onto it from XP and it is possibly the easiest system i've ever had. I bought this laptop shortly before Christmas and i've found no bugs at all it's not glitchy and i haven't found any programe that doesn't run on it (even if i have to go through and download a different version.) It's fantastic. It's not too unnecessarily gagety and the gagets it does have are actually really useful. My mother is desperate to change onto it after having a play Beth
