abwsco
I know I'm not the only one who hatched some boys in the summer. Has everyone elses started to crow? Still no sign with mine even though they are 28 weeks old now so Sunday and Dinner are still living with us. They've both got combs and wattles coming along nicley and I even saw Dinner trying to do the "deed" with Majnula the other day. He didn't half get a peck from her for his efforts though Edited January 20, 2010 by Guest
Griffin
Boris was hatched at the end of May, he's still not crowing, thankfully. He's not shown any interest in the ladies either. Steve is about six weeks younger, nothing from him yet but I suspect he will before Boris. I have a Silkie born in July that I'm not sure about, I think it might be a boy but it hasn't crowed either. My boys must be very laid back
abwsco
We're hoping for two non crowing cockerels -lol although they are regularly flying up onto the cube now and surveying the garden. I think that will be where they first crow!
Redwing
My Welsummer boy was hatched in June and crowed about the beginnng of Dec I think..

Chook n Boo Mum
My Lt Sussex Buffling, Yellow Legs, was born at the end of July & starting his "singing practice" in the 10 days before Christmas.........on the 30th he went to a new home Sha x
Griffin
Forget what I said, one of them crowed this morning The noise came from a coop shared by Steve & the Silkie and of course as soon as I opened the door there was absolute silence so I haven't a clue who it is. I've heard nothing since. Hopefully I'll find out tomorrow morning.
abwsco
LOL's Griffin. Still no crowing here but I saw Dinner doing "the deed" with Barney when I was watching them through the patio doors when I'd got in from work.

abwsco
It was Nymphadora the Silkie So Steve lives What are you going to do with him Griffin? I don't think it will be long before we have crowing as Dinner sounds like his voice has broken and his comb and wattles have grown loads since last week. abwsco
Well, I haven't heard anything but my Dad had nipped round this morning and I was out. He is sure he heard a COCK A DOODLE DOO. Given that Mo our nutty CLB sometimes crows I'm being hopeful that it was her -lol
Griffin
Spring must be in the air because within days they've all started crowing and attempting procreation I'd planned to despatch Steve this morning, rumpy pumpy is not allowed here for safety reasons, they always pick on the little bantams, and Steve has always been destined for a date with the oven. Dino went the same way last week. Boris sensed Steves departure and decided as he was now top boy he'd exercise his lungs and crow and crow and crow and crow and then crow a bit more. Common sense prevailed, I knew realistically we couldn't keep Boris, no matter how much we all loved him, so I reluctantly despatched him too. The kids are devastated. I couldn't bring myself to pluck him, he was a pet, my boy, not a meat chicken. So in the space of a few days I've despatched all four adult cockerels, I've still got three boy growers but they'll not be ready for months. I'm glad of the break. I'm sick of killing, I hate doing it and four so quickly has been hard. It's too early to start drowning my sorrows so I'm off to eat my own bodyweight in cake. Daphne
You're a brave lass - well done for facing up to it all and taking the responsbility for the consequences of hatching; not many people can do it.
Chicken Shirl
Good grief Griffin I am in awe. What a sad thing for you to have to do. I agree Cake is the answer. Enjoy it, every last crumb.
abwsco
Hope you enjoyed your cake Griffin. Still haven't heard any crowing even though I've been in all day but Dinner humped Barney when she was stuffing her face just before going into the cube. She wasn't impressed. We haven't dispatched any chickens yet but have a list of people who will show us how. I'm just worried about starting to blub infront of them
abwsco
Well, he's crowing. We heard it at 7.15 this morning but nothing since DD could hear it through her bedroom window which is double galzed and she had no night vents open. Going to shut the door of the Go tonight and use a blackout cover.
abwsco
No more noise during the day. I've just shut the Go door and will see how that goes. DD has also taken some pics today of Sunday and Dinner so I will try and get them up in a bit if anyone is interested.

Pikey
Oh no Griffin Suggest you crack open the wine or what ever you fancy drinking now You are all brave to dispatch your cockerels.....Cole is so loud and starts crowing at 6 sometimes 5 in the morning and then a couple of times throughout the day......so I bring him in every night into the porch...not fun in a 1 bed house but I couldn't bear to be without him .......especially now hes learnt to fly up to my shoulder and sit on it whilst I'm on the PC (just don't tell my OH )
