Gelbel
I was away on Wednesday night and left strict instructions that the girls had to have access fresh water (of the unfrozen variety) as soon as they got up. My DH works obnoxious hours so it was really important he does this. Yesterday morning, the poor love was out at 4am putting out water laced with glycerine just before he went to work. When I got home last night I commented that he looked extra tired. This is the conversation that followed. DH, "Well, I had a really bad night's sleep." Me, "Oh, dear. Were you missing me?" DH, "No." Me, "Not that dog fox shouting at some ungodly hour?" DH, "No." Me, "What then?" DH, "I was awake all night working out what I can do to stop the water freezing to stop me having to go out to the girls at some stupid hour if you're not here." Then.......... DH, "When I was out there the girls started making like clucks so I popped my hand in and gave them a stroke." He's fallen hook, line and sinker. I should point out that it's been SO cold the glycerine it not too good at night and the tea light in a tin is not feasible for us.
Egluntyne
Just a note of caution....glycerine isn't good for the hens in the quantities required to stop the water freezing.
The Dogmother
I agree with Egluntyne. Take their water indoors at night, then pop it out with a snuggle safe underneath the drinker. This will keep it ice free for ages, especially if you wrap the pad in newspaper to insulate it. I do this and then reheat it at lunchtime. Guest
You could have suggested bringing them in to see if he would have In the bad weather I just went out with a hot little watering can and filled up a dog bowl(cocker spaniel one that is hard to tip over) it seemed to work fine. And put the hot water over the galvanised drinker..they were quite happy to drink off the floor. Sounds like you have a well trained OH
