TAJ
Really cute. Amazes me how fast the feathers appear. Ickle pickle rock is lovely I have said before - not on my list as a chicken I wanted but it is growing on me (so will no doubt end up being a boy!) TAJ
For Redwing - now taken in daylight without the flash so heads are clearer .. go on tell me I have 3/3 boys! http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2631.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2632.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2633.jpg Tracy
Redwing
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm definitely not as easy as my barreds No idea but if they were mine I would be loosely thinking girl, girl, boy at this stage
TAJ
Not photos of them all, but you will get the idea - the frizzle gets to look more scruffy and frizzled by the day, the SL dottes have been slow to feather up, but starting to look stunning now. 4 week photos: Silkie (getting fully feathered) http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2636.jpg Frizzle (feathers coming, but a lot still to grow http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2638.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2637.jpg SL Dottes (feathers coming, chest has lovely markings now, 2nd one less feathered as yet) http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2640.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2645.jpg CL (male & fully feathered) http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2642.jpg Bantam Buff Plymouth Rock (fully feathered) http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2644.jpg I think they are lovely - they can now fly to the roof of the brooder, but need to be fully feathered before I start on getting them off heat or even consider them moving to the eglu. Madchook
Lovely pics Tracy! Are you keeping the legbar to breed or will he be dinner? (wondering what to do with mine-whether they are worth growing).
TAJ
That buff rock is soooooo sweet! The second SL looks like a boy with those wattles! Currently I am thinking I have 2 boys/1girl on the dottes. One is feathering up a lot quicker than the other two (trait of females) and that one seems to have a thinner comb - I will lok at wattles a bit more closely tomorrow. TAJ
Lovely pics Tracy! Are you keeping the legbar to breed or will he be dinner? (wondering what to do with mine-whether they are worth growing). He will live here happily until he crows, then becomes dinner - that said I still have two of my meat birds hatched last October, so 9 out of 11 made it to the table, but these two (girls) just look so pretty and started laying. I do have a female CL so it would be nice to breed, but I live too close to people that keeping a cockeral is not really an option for me. OH has been on a dispatching course and wil will eat any cockerals. Tracy
Griffin
I've just despatched my CL boy, aged 17 weeks or so, and there's nothing of him. I wouldn't grow on any others in future. If crowing is a problem then they mature too quickly for it to be worthwhile.
Madchook
Hi Tracy, I know you do hun, I wasn't meaning to ask a loaded question there I shouldn't count my chooks before they hatch really, and it will depend how many Marans hatch, but knowing the sex at hatching means I can make a decision regarding the legbars iykwim.Never know, I might be lucky (pffff!!!) and have a female sway! Will be interested to hear how much meat he has on him though when you do..you know! ETA, Griffin, just seen your post - thankyou for that info! TAJ
Having examined the wattles today I am pretty sure the dottes are 2 males & 1 female. Two only have wing feathers (wk 4) & both of these have wattles, one certainly has a wider comb - the other (hopefully female?) is much more feathered and no sign of wattles and a thinner combe - lets hope I get 1 girls from my 6 expensive eggs! TAJ
Some more photos - they are now 1-2 days short of 6 weeks and in the pink eglu and having a great time. The scruffy frizzle is a little camera shy and went inside as soon as I went out - we still have 7 healthy chicks - I think one of the SL Dottes was also hiding inside. http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2649.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2650.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2651.jpg http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2652.jpg I still think they are all lovely - of the 7 one is female, 3 are male and I am still to decide on 3. TAJ
I am getting more and more convinced I have many cockerals! There are 3 I wasn't sure on (Plymouth Rock, Silkie & Frizzle) The silkie has alway looked very upright and big - now it (he?) has started the head-to-head chest to chest stand offs with the known males and it is not doing it with the girls - I know silkies take a long time to sex, but at 6 weeks I am convinced it is another boy . Then the frizzle is growing wattles , but I will keep my fingers crossed. The Bantam Plymouth rock, plus one of the Dottes do possibly look female, so it might be 5 boys/2 girls! Redwing
The Silkie does look like a boy, you can normally spot them as their 'hair' is slicked back in a quiff The BPR bantam looks like a girl though
