Chicken still poorly...what to do?

Recommended Posts

Delilah, our poorly chicken is not really showing any signs of improvement....

She was wormed at the vet on Monday, given a dose of glucose solution, and started on a 10-day course of antibiotics. So we're on day 5 now of the course.

She is still not moving around much, she is drinking - mainly raindrops off the run bars, but also a bit out of the glug. But she still isn't eating, still a bit hunched and closing her eyes. I've been giving her Nutri-drops for the last 4 days - but no miraculous 'improvement in 30 mins'... Although her comb has a fraction more colour (after going quite pale).

I know we still have a few days to go on the antibiotics, but is there anything else we can do?

Should I try syringing some food into her? Or would that cause her more stress than good?

I just don't know what to do for the best.

It might stress her out more by syringing, but try tempting her with wet sloppy food. Make up a porridge with pellets and warm water, add some sweetcorn or her favourite treat and sit with her on your lap. She might just not feel like competing with the others for food.

Tinned tuna is good either in spring water or rinsed if in brine.

Hope she is better soon.

She isn't being bullied by her friend is she?

that might keep her from the food and make her weaker. :?

grapes are good for encouging to eat and have fluid in, mine really seem to like cucumber when they are poorly.

you could try a litte honey in some slightly warmed water.

mealworms to might get her going.

I also found ready brek made with water goes down well.

oh and probiotic yogurt.

sometimes once they start to eat it sort of kick starts them.

you might find she is better with her friend for competition, it will depend really, try her both ways.

Did the vet check in her vent to see if there was an egg there?

I would guess (but only guess )that if she is not drinking loads there is not a temperature?

they show the same signs for most things unfortunately.

Did you ring the vet yet?

hope she perks up soon,

The vet checked her vent but couldn't find anything...

She doesn't seem to be having bullying trouble from Doris - and it's only the 2 of them - although Doris is noticeably more confident now - Delilah was top chicken before.

She's been drinking ok this morning, and her comb is definitely getting more colour - I'll try and coax some wet food into her - as you both suggest - thanks for that.

I'm hoping to get her through the weekend and then take her next week to this other vet in Portslade who apparently has more chicken experience. It's a nightmare trying to find one that knows what to do with chickens. I thought it would be standard for all vets to do...bit obviously not.

do you have a "pets Corner" any where near you?

Often in garden centers. they sell an oregano supplement, I use Oregpostim, but abwsco's suggestion and mine I think you might only get mail order.

I always bloomin forget the other name, oooo HERBAN, came to me! :D I have seen this in Pets corner tho might be an idea to ring 1st.

good luck

you might like to try maggots, they often go had for them, (buy from a fishing shop, white ones preferably, but go with pink if they only have pink, apparently it is only food colouring they use now!) :?

or pets ar home wax worms bigger and less yewk! factot , or live mealworms!!!

Not having much luck with anything yet. I've noticed that she keeps pecking at one of her toes, but there's nothing visible there - does that mean anything?

Anyway - I'm going to get some Herban (seems easier to get hold of than the other one) and live mealworms - she showed some interest in a caterpillar I found, but Doris steamed in and snatched it away! So mealworms could be a winner...

Thanks for all the advice - really appreciate it.

Delilah has just died... :cry::cry:

Not sure what else I could have done for her.

Feeling a bit upset - we've only had the chickens since 15 December. When I took her to the vet - the vet thought she was an old chicken, and was surprised when I said she should only be young (point of lay according to Omlet). Has anyone else had this happen with chickens from Omlet?

Aah I'm so sorry to hear about Delilah, it's heartbreaking losing one of your girls. It sounds a bit like she was eggbound? The trouble with chickens is they can go down hill so quickly and you have no time to help them. I have a poorly hen at the moment who doesn't seem to be getting any better, they are such a worry.

Rest in Peace Delilah xx
