How not to do it

Recommended Posts

I posted the other day that we were going to move our little lot and their cube up to the veggie patch to do a bit of clearing. Ignoring Mostin's very sound advice to just put the chickens up there then bring them down at night, we set about the move. We stopped halfway so that I could give the cube a pressure wash and clean with disinfectant. :) There were also two hens with dirty botties so decided to give them a wash too - not with the pressure washer I hasten to add. I had read that some of you use a hair dryer to dry them so after cleaning up Desdemona I set the hair dryer on low and started giving her a gentle blowdry. Wrong, very, very wrong. She shot out the biggest poo ever that went all over the wall and window :vom: (and me). After that, we just got on with the move, up the very steep slope and finally positioned the cube. We put up some netting to keep them enclosed and went down for a well deserved coffee. Sitting at the kitchen table, we looked out of the window and what did we see, three hens pecking in the flower bed. Went to check on the netting - no idea how they got out. Henri was still there crowing for his girls who were taking no notice.

Needless to say, the cube is now back in the orchard and the veggie patch will have to do without chicken maintenance

We have a much smaller garden then you have by the sounds if it (unless one small apple tree in a pot counts as an orchard!!) but I put the chooks in the fenced off Veg patch to aid in the weeding and digging over etc.

I came back inside, sat down, and then there was a tap on the back door. And there are the 2 chooks looking at me through the glass, all innocent, asking for treats.

So not to be put off, I put them back in the veg patch, checked the netting and sat back down... You can guess what happened next!! 3 attempts it took to keep the chooks fenced in!

I wasn't so worried about them getting out, but if they could get out, it means they must be able to get back in again - and once there are veg sown in there I do NOT want the chooks in there!!
