Tara.F
With spring on it's way we've integrated our little flock. The 'littluns' have lived in a large rabbit cage in our dining room all winter, free ranging outside on dry days alongside (though totally ignored by) our original girls. They're all together now. There's been almost no argy bargy but each day the (female) littluns stay huddled in the eglu and refuse to come outside. We get them out for cuddles and to check them every few hours and none have sustained any injuries at all. The old girls simply chase them back indoors. We now put more food and water in the eglu for them. Angel, our tiny seramer cockerel, on the other hand refuses point blank to go in the eglu and spends all day outside (flirting with the big girls). At dusk when we go out to lock up, there he stands...all on his own. We've tried waiting untill total darkness but eventually we have to bring him back inside for the night. He's too little to stay out and the girls need their door shut in the weather Do cockerels not sleep in the coop with the girls then? Am I being really dense? Patricia W
Mine does. But he often perches in the doorway so has to be shoved in so we can shut the door! Several of mine would prefer to perch in the run though so I've stopped putting perches in there for that reason. As they free range all the time, they really don't miss them. I don't think it's a gender thing to want to sleep outside. See what others think. Tricia
Daphne
Our big boy is always first to bed! I prefer to think of him entering the house, then settling down ready to pat the aubiose with his wing and welcome the ladies into his lair one by one! Wife No 1 is always the first hen in, followed by the younger ones who always prefer to stay out late, but they are now old enough to know better PS I know that there is no naughtiness at nighttime in the world of chickens
Redwing
Most of my cockerels sleep in their doorways, if I want to shut the door I have to shove them back a bit
craftyhunnypie
My big Cochin 'Boon' is first on the perch in the shed. Spongebob the frizzle is about 3rd in out of 7 in the cube. Bingo the pekin rounds his girls up & they all try getting in the eglu at the same time. Scooter the silkie - walks the perimeter of the eglu & run rounding his girls up & he is last in. Such a gentleman! Mine all go to bed in their houses. Perhaps your little cockerel isn't sure if he's rounded all his ladies up & is worried that one might still be out - either that or he wants picking up for a bedtime cuddle! Pikey
Cole is always last in. He does however stand in the doorway calling to them so that the girls have to push past him He sleeps with a lady under each wing at the back of the Eglu......so sweet
Seagazer
I love all the descriptions of the 'men' calling their ladies in. Made me smile
