craftyhunnypie
I bought a load of seeds & peat pots etc yesterday. I need some compost, then I can set up the propagators & the seed trays on the windowsills & in the green house. I got...carrots (big variety) Autumn something? Money maker tomatoes Gardeners delight tomatoes Sunflowers - I will not be beaten by never being able to grow these! Petunias Busy lizzy Fragrant stocks Pansies Spring Onions (Lisbon) Lettuce (little gem) We've been tidying the garden up today, emptying out greenhouse, sorting out pots to plant & baskets. I just love Sring & getting in that ' growing' mood. Emma.x
Valkyrie
@ Bruce and Arnie! Didn't get back till late afternoon, and was rather tired, so parsnips and other stuff tomorrow instead - supposed to be nice, so they say.
Christian
Haven't sown my seeds yet, but I have planted 10 raspberry canes on Friday. Still have some room in the bed for a few strawberries. Yesterday was clearing out more of the greenhouse (have to get some sealant for the windows as they still leak when it rains), so I'm almost up and running. First on the agenda this afternoon will be parsnips, then I can cover them with glass so the girls can't dig in that bed any more. Do you need any strawberry plants Koojie? I have around 25 potted up from last year and nowhere to put them Just couldn't let all those runners go to waste! Drop me a line! Broad beans are up in the green house - only planted them 10 days ago and there are leaves appearing already Sweetpea seeds went in too - a free pack from a Gardeners World. kinsk
Was only thinking about what to plant at the weekend. Need to get my sweet peas done, I think I left it too late last year, they grew and had pleanty of leaves but only one or two flowers out of 4 container fulls Definitely doing courgettes again, they were a huge success last year, and being able to do stuffed flowers was a huge bonus. Broad beans, peas and a few other types of beans will be going in. Potatoes not sure if I'll bother this year as had such dissapointing yields the last few years. Tomatoes, definitely, although they got a bit neglected last year and didn't get enough water
Valkyrie
Oooh Christian - that would be lovely, thank you. Not sure I would have enough room for 25 in the bed - but there are always pots to fill! Haven't had strawberries here for years. When we first moved in the previous people had them in a bed near the kitchen - now our greenhouse sits on that part. Still got sidetracked today yet again - attacked the paths with the power hose. Spent all day out there and not even half way. So much to do - so little time - must do something tomorrow because Thursday I gather is going to be bleh (although it will be nice in the greenhouse ). Cinnamon
Gorgeous - what are they, please?
Old Speckled Hen
They are cascading cape daisies from Thompson and Morgan. The plants I got this morning look very healthy with good roots. I got their hanging planter that goes with them as it was free when they had their offer on some time ago. I'll leave them in the conservatory ( aka my greenhouse extension ) for now. I love these surprises. I ordered this months ago and had forgotten http://www.thompson-morgan.com/plants1/product/p89526/1.html

Valkyrie
That will be a very nice show. All my best intentions are always thwarted. Was going to start sowing seeds - looked at the compost - hmmm, not good. So that was emptied into the grotty veggie bed - it will still make a good conditioner - just not for seeds. So coerced Murray into getting some more - but that wasn't till this afternoon. I did manage to sow my sweet peas (hmm, can't eat those - priorities out the window) and my crimson flowered broad beans. I did have them before, but I guess they crossed and I had lots of different shades of red and purple broad bean flowers. So new stock in and old seed thrown. I feel a bit better now I've made a start. I'm also going to have to fence off the veggie patch as the beds resemble the surface of the moon with lots of bark chippings that should be on the paths. henriette
I planted 6 kgs of potatoes yesterday. I know it's probably a bit early but the rain is due today and we are off for a couple of weeks next week. Have still another 10 kgs to do, but I'm not sure my back will cope with it
chickencam
Planting large quantities of potatoes is quite a task, we usually end up on our knees by the end of it. It is usually the first really physical job we do each year, it nearly kills us.
Lesley
Same here! - I don't envy you that job! - we'll do ours at Easter. We put half the broad beans in yesterday.
henriette
Potatoes all in Luckily I made a mistake and the bag I thought was 10kgs was only 5gs. Moving today is not easy though I would love to grow broad beans but my loved one doesn't eat them so there is no point really
BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
i have just sown some cauliflower and beetroot. last weeks toms have just sprouted so into the current woodshed they go. i picked up a few different tomato seeds from the seed heritage in rugby, when they came into the village recently to run one of these seedy sundays (exchanges), so i am going to give these a go heres a link to the heritage for anyone interested http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/news/news_topic.php?id=
Cinnamon
Right, I have sown Chilli Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers, Red peppers, Melons & Q's all in the cheap as chips neat little Aldi windowsil greenhouse. I have also started some red onion sets off in modules. I normally put them straight into the ground & have to keep the birds & squirrels off, but someone said if you get them nice & sprouted this way then plant them ou,they fare much better
theherd123
I have planted a hanging basket of tumbling toms, loads of stocks so the patio pots will smell divine and about 200 sweet pea seeds - which will probably die as they always do! Ain't Nobody Here
I haven't sown anything yet . I'm still thinking it's too early up here? Can I ask what you all do with old compost from last years pots? Is it not worth saving or can you use it in raised beds and pots mixed with new compost and fertilizer?
henriette
Not sure what the real answer is, but if there is a lot of old root left I put the whole lot on the compost. If not I put it all in a wheelbarrow and mix in new compost with it. It has always seemed to work
