Live mealworms...from Omlet..!

Recommended Posts

As a treat for our girls we bought some live mealworms from Omlet.

Now, they adore the dried variety - in fact if they could they would eat these ALL DAY EVERYDAY.

So, this morning, OH and I went out with the girls while they were having their early morning constitution round the garden, and having put some live worms in their "treat"box (which usually contains grapes, dried mealworms, sweetcorn and some sunflower seeds), Gloria decided that the wriggling critters in their box was NOT what was usually in there and she then turned her beak up at them and walked away. It was the kind of walk that said "No, thank you, we don't want to try anything new"

OH then put some from the box onto the bark in their run. Gloria then "picked" at one, taking it in her beak and walking off with it, in the back of the run to look at later.

Flo, by this time came to see what all the fuss was about and decided that she would try a couple, at which point Gloria decided to try another one. And then another one.

Soon the small pile of worms were gone, but I don't think they were that keen. :eh:

Having replaced the live worms with the dried variety in their "box", they then munched down on these with great vigour.

Please don't tell me we have "super fussy chooks"...... Does anyone else's girls turn their beaks up at live mealworms????

Of my four, only one was really into the idea of wriggly things from the start, and while the others were going for the corn / seed / veg, she was following me round the garden hoping for lovely juicy worms to be turned up by my garden fork.

She was also only one laying at that stage, so may have been after the protein, and their previous premises had been indoors so they'd not had any opportunity to dig for themselves.

Now when they come out the run all four of them head straight for the raised beds (so far no veg in them) on the hunt for worms, or better still, slugs. They do still like the dried mealworms but would far rather have live ones.

And they got a dead frog the other day, and started a game of chicken rugby. I had no idea how long it had been dead for, so I took it off them. :vom:
