Torrin
Haven't post for ages, although I regularly peruse the forum! Have been enjoying my chooks for a while now, would really like to add a couple more and would particularly like a WIR, even without the extra hens. OH however prefers the option of fencing off the back of the garden properly - got poles and netting at the mo which the dog has started jumping over! Need some persuasive arguments for why a WIR would be a better option please!! btw currently have a cube with 3m run and 4 chooks, they don't get out everyday, esp since the dog incident! Plum
I'd do both so they can have a free range area and not ruin the garden. Persuasion well just show him the pictures of the runs and send him in to clean them out a few times.
Olly
A WIR is a much better option: Security - if you get a good run, then your chooks can have more space to wander and you won't have to worry about their safety from predators, or worry about them escaping. Convenience - it's sooo much easier to clean out the Eglu/Cube, poo pick, fill up feeders etc without crouching, bending, kneeling etc. Health - if you have a WIR it's easy to cover the roof with plastic of some sort. This keeps your chooks dry, and keeps the floor dry - that's been really important for me lately, it's kept the mud down a lot! I still let my girls out to forage in the garden when I'm out there to supervise, but having the WIR has totally changed the way I look after my hens, and made them even more enjoyable. Persuasive enough?
Torrin
Thanks Olly, just what I need! Clear concise facts are the way to persuade OH I think!
Space Chick
Walk in Run - Fox Proof, Contained mess, Easy to clean, Happier Hens, Better for holidays when other people are looking after them, more entertainment options for hen eg. tables for levels, Healthier Hens, Less chance of rats etc, allow for longer guilt free holidays (I only had a weekend away before the WIR but went away for 10 days at Christmas ), dry with a roof so less smell on wet days. Fenced off area - Basically the opposite of above OK I may be a bit flippant, but I agree with Olly, having a WIR was the best thing I ever did for my girls My girls have access to the garden when I can supervise, but when I can't I know they are safe, secure and most importantly happy
Couperman
Plus.......... When the next bout of hysteria comes around about Bird Flu Your neighbours can rest assured that the pandemic didn't start with you because...... in accordance with Defra guidlines your hens can be kept under cover during any outbreak and they won't frantenise with the hundreds of skeens of wild sneezing geese that constantly fly overhead dropping flu ridden tissues. And you have something to dangle your hanging baskets off too! Kev.
Olly
yes, those pesky sneezing geese are a real risk! A good point though, Kev - a WIR meets the 'covered' requirement, provided you have a roof on it, of course! I've just come up with another one, this morning. A covered run means you can fill up feeders, collect eggs etc in the dry - I had to trot briskly through the rain from the back door, of course, but at least when I got there I could shelter inside. Yes, I have sheltered in my run too, although I do enjoy just sitting out there, hence why I put the football seats in
Ain't Nobody Here
All the above . I think our WIR has enhanced our garden .
Janty
I take my cuppa down to the WIR every morning and sit on the tyre. It's very relaxing.
