Lynn in Bristol
Wanting to give the girls a boost, I ordered some poultry drink from Omlet. I finally got around to using it on Saturday, shortly before going out to a dinner party. I was a bit surprised when I opened it - it was bright red. "How clever," I thought, "it must be coloured to stop me from overdosing them!" Anyway, I managed to spill some on my hand, and spent the dinner party feeling like Lady MacBeth. The next day, child 3 went to check on the girls and came back in tears. "The chickens must be dying!" she sobbed, "their water's full of blood!" Chickens didn't seem to mind though! SillyClucker
So i put apple cider vinegar in their fresh water and every other day i put that grapefruit concentrate stuff in. I let them out into their run area and they start drinking out of the nearest muddy puddle, whyyyyyyyyy
theherd123
How much do you put it? It might be too strong for them
SillyClucker
I put in about a third of a cap of vinegar and a few drops of the citracidal stuff but never at the same time. ~This is into their glug peanut. They do drink it while they're in the Eglu run but as soon as i let them out they go straight for a puddle. They seem to like rainwater so i guess i should get a water butt. theherd123
I suppose if they are drinking from the glug and the puddles then i shouldnt worry too much Maybe they are just too lazy to go back to the glug when they are out and about? SillyClucker
Emma, they are just perverse, they do the opposite to what you think. i've spent time making them porridge and they turn their beaks up and go and eat grass.
theherd123
Ahh but you still love 'em though!
kannie
Ours always love rain water best too - they find it in all sorts of places when they're free ranging. But have you tasted citricial water: its really bitter, so you can't blame them!
Snowy
Mine don't like the glug too much either, although they do use it if confined to barracks (I only put a tiny drop of citricidal in). They do seem to enjoy sipping the raindrops off the run though, and when they are out, they go for the dog's water bowl
Lynn in Bristol
Could be worse, the cats all drink out of the toilet, despite having clean water always on hand! Our chickens used to love drinking out of the pond, but we had to stop them getting at it because they used to eat all the tadpoles and then poo in it. By the way, is anyone else with a pond totally inundated with frogspawn this year? Our pond is covered in it, in some places it's piled high out of the water. I may have to let the girls out to keep the tadpoles under control later in the year, if it all hatches. Has anyone ever seen what chickens do to frogs, given the chance? It's not pretty! Looney
Has anyone ever seen what chickens do to frogs, given the chance? It's not pretty! We have a frog that decided to live underneath the eglu......it had a very lucky escape last weekend when I moved the eglu. Doris immediately went to peck his eye out and when I held her back so Froggie could hop away she went bananas trying to free herself from my grip to go after him/her I have photos (not very good ones ) of Froggie chilling out in the eglu run when the girls are locked away at night.... Im glad mine aren't the only ones!! My girls much prefer rain water and muddy puddle to fresh tap water.... prehapse I should buy them bottled water (joke).... they would probably turn their beaks up at that too!
