chelsea
Have been thinking about re-stocking our flock as we are down to four now. The Devon Traditional Breed Centre have Jubilee and Laced Orpingtons ready to go now and I was wondering on average out of all you "Orp" keepers how loud they are? I got Cochins as they are reknowned for being quiet, well my white one is extremely loud but the other one is as quiet as a mouse. I know you can't guarantee any hen being quiet regardless of breed but would love an idea of how much noise they make!
half dozen
Hi Chelsea,we got our glod laced orpington from DTB last summer and she is the most timid of all our flock! She never makes a sound, whether thats cos she is timid or whether its just her nature. She loves cuddles though 2 of my cochins from there can be very vocal I want a lemon pyle brahma from there...have you seen them?? chelsea
Ooh, so they are quiet?! I have seen the lemon Pyle Brahmas (beautiful) did you see they have them there also? I think I might go for a Jubilee and a laced.....but I have always wanted a black one.

Whether this includes the Lemon Brahmas I don't know. I might ring them later and see what they've got. Hubby's at work today so might aswell! Griffin
I only had young boy Orps so I can't comment on how loud they were as a breed in general but I've got two Gold Brahmas and I don't know they're there. They are quiet, keep themselves to themselves and are incredibly gentle. The one thing I did notice with the Orps is that they were clumsy, they didn't look where they were going, where they were putting their feet and they would unintentionally step on smaller chooks. My Brahmas don't do that, they are more careful. Maybe it's a boy/girl thing or maybe it's a breed trait, I don't know, but it has put me off keeping Orps. Chook n Boo Mum
Ok, when my Orpies have their beaks closed they are big puffs of feathers ..........when their beaks are flapping tin the breeze they are each noisy little wingebags I wouldn't be without them though & am even considering more on my "to get" list, so they can't be too bad Just read Griffin's post.........yes they are ungainly......and very much led by their stomachs I'd love a visit to the DTBC............one day Sha x
chelsea
Sha, are they noisy as in "screechy"? My Cochin is noisy and screechy at the same time! I suppose I could get an orp and a brahma. DTBC are ringing me back, sounded bedlam down there when I phoned a moment ago.
Chook n Boo Mum
I'll try & get a video of one of the Dowager Duchesses in full flow.... Have got a small vid of Willow muttering..she was not in "full flow" mode ..will be when I go back outside without the camera though....I'll stick it on here later when DH is off my PC Sha x Edited April 5, 2010 by Guest
Falkor
Ok - so Orps! Gin, my splash (and top chook) is fairly quiet, she egg announces occasionally but not every time and she has the occasional gripe and mutter when someone (normally a pekin ) gets up to mischief. In general she is very laid back OSH, my jubilee is a whiney whinge bag.....she chunters almost constantly but never egg announces. The chuntering can be heard when I am in the house. She is second in command and acts as Gins bouncer. Goes to give someone a gentle tap telling off and ends up charging at them and overshooting her target They crouch left right and centre so are easy to get hold of and (touches wood) these two have never been broody. Not that I would trust them with eggs...i reckon they would be scrambled rather than chicks. I also have a partridge orp but still getting to know her, she is quiet but I think this is cos currently she is bottom of the pecking order. I have an orp cross bantie who is delightful and a brahma cross who too is lovely! Very friendly and enjoy snuggles.

Daphne
I can honestly say my LF orp girls are very very quiet. Bantam madam is a bit noisier, but even so not bad. LF boys on the other hand are very very noisy! My all time favourite bird is a LF black and I also have jubilees - you'll probably find these are smaller; its taking a while for them to be bred larger unless you come across a strain using German blood. Personally I'm not keen on using LF as broodys as they can be quite clumsy. However, my jubs have never been broody and actually since I got the cockeral "Ooops, word censored!"ody has been broody
LJ's Chooks
We have 2 gold laced a boy and a girl, she never makes a sound unless she's been upset by a magpie or a crow, he is LOUD! We will def get more orps they are just fab, but we would like a cuckoo orp ... Not a lemon one and they seem impossible to find. Good luck! chocolateeclaire
Got mine from DTB centre - one Orphington was noisey but that was because she turned out to be a boy!!! The other was fine. I would love one of the laced one but have just taken in a COF and 5 really has to be my lot. However I will go to the DTB centre just to have a look and enjoy their wonderful food!!! chelsea
It is a lovely place for an afternoon out and their hens are really good quality (albeit a bit expensive). Their Jubilee & Gold Laced are ready in 12 weeks. OH says yes and they are taking orders.

chelsea
I told them I'd ring back. It's just deciding what to get now... I think from the replies on here I am definitely going to get a gold laced. Just need to narrow down the second choice now to either Black or Jubilee or a Brahma. I want to stay at 6 as I like lots of room in my WIR.
