THF Nick
We have a cock and 3 hens and he seems to be a real gent. When wondering the garden, should he find food he calls the girls over and then steps aside to allow them to feed or when he picks up a piece he is happy for them to take it from his mouth. At night, he is first back into the run and calls the girls to him. If they don't appear prompto he goes out and rounds them up. So, do all cocks look after their flocks or am I just seeing things that aren't there? Thanks Nick
Janty
My in-laws have got a silver dorking cockerel called Alfie. He does exactly the same things as you have described so in my very limited experience of cockerel behaviour it seems to be what they do. tom123
Same as Tash, some nice and some really horrible I've got a little Wyandotte boy who takes each lady to bed each night. He herds one up the ladder onto the perches, clucks to her and then goes back down and does the same with the other 3 hens. When they are all in, he comes back down, has a quick drink and then of he goes
Daphne
I'm happy to say mine is a lovely gentleman - feeds the hens, sits with them when they lay, regularly inspects the clean aubiose and coos his delight with the housekeeping arrangements, happy to be picked up and stroked, will sit on your lap .... in fact he's much nicer all round than the hens! Pikey
- feeds the hens, sits with them when they lay, regularly inspects the clean aubiose and coos his delight with the housekeeping arrangements/quote] Cole must be a gent too cos he does all this. He loves to get above the hens (ie on top of Eglu run, spade in the ground, fence, conifer tree) so he can watch over them and look out for danger. abwsco
Mine weren't but that could be the fact that we only got to see them when they had only just started crowing and learning the "ropes" My poor girls got leapt on from behind at any time even when they had their heads in the grub!
