I am looking to get my first eglu either classis or go, am wanting to keep 4 chickens? Was ideally looking to have the Bluebelles but one chicken site said they were to big for eglu, can anyone advise on what they feel is best. thanks

How about bantams?

I have Pekin bantams, they are such good little characters, mad as a hat, lay eggs, but go broody, if you are wanting eggs produced everyday, these girls are NOT for you, the go broody alot.

You could have three (minimum) in a eglu.. there not too big.. are you letting them free range or in a run? if so this is fine.

I have 2 Bluebelles who now live in the cube, but they have quite happily lived in an Eglu before now.

Welcome to the forum . I started out with 3 hybrids in an eglu and they were very happy in that with a run plus converter. I now have 5 in the same eglu but they are in a walk in run so have plenty of space. It's the run space that is the issue, really. Also, I only have 4 laying so there are generally no queues for the nestbox .

 

(One of mine is a Bluebelle and she's no bigger than the other girls!)

I would go for 2 light sussex bantams their eggs are small but so are the birds but they are stocky and can stick up for themselves

When we 'inherited' our bluebelle we thought it best to get her a friend and picked up a little brown hybrid like my other girlies. The bluebelle was not impressed with her new friend and was very pecky for quite a few days I wish now that I had checked on the breed before I picked her up and got her a friend of the same size. She is quite a bit heavier than my warrens.

 

Bluebelles are lovely and the eglu is big enough for four if you have the run space. My recent newbies are a mix of hybrids but of similar age and size which seems to have worked better when they all have to live together from the off.

 

However, hens are individuals and your experience will depend on the temperaments of the birds you get. There is always likely to be some pecking as they sort themselves out.

You could probably fit in 4 bluebelles but 1 would have to sleep in the nestbox to fit probably (judging by the size of ours) and you might not want that.

My Bluebelle is only slightly bigger than my other girls. When we had four chooks - although we had two eglus - they all slept in the same one. They fitted easily and would have done so even if my didn't sleep in the nestbox.

 

As others have said - it is the run size that is more crucial and it sounds as though yours will have plenty of space for four.
