Shanijo
Hi there can anyone help one of our chickens has started to act strangely over the past couple of days we noticed that she was limping when she was in the run we thought this was down to them digging holes and she had fell or tripped in one becasue when we loosed them into the garden she then seemed fine. Thursday I noticed that she was lying down in the run she would occasionally get up to have a drink or some food but then she was down again her tail feathers are down and not up and when she lies down down its as though her back end is pulsating. We researched these syptoms on the internet on Friday and thought she may be egg bound so we have tried her in a couple of baths of water to which no effect. We cannot understand what is going on as she seems to be eating and drinking she is pooing as far as we know, we have noticed that down her breast bone the feathers have gone does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be is she egg bound, broody or what please help. Christian
If she is broody, you can see the symptoms here Her vent will always pulsate, they always do, so nothing to worry about. A pink, moist, pulsating vent is normal. Sometimes it can look red and sore if they are egg bound, due to straining to get the egg out. Just keep an eye on her and if in any doubt, pop along to the vet.
Daphne
She doesn't sound broody - she'd be on the nest if she was (although she could have been preparing for it, hence the feathers). It could be egg binding; there are some recent threads on here but basically if this has been going on a few days she needs some assistance. Either you hold her over a warm bath, steam rises and may help her lay (but sounds like thats not going to help); you investigate with lubricated, gloved fingers (but you can't always easily feel the egg) and help the egg out (not for everyone!); or you take her to the vet. Limping not associated with egg binding so its possible she has something else wrong/as well. I think I'd take her to the vet.
Egluntyne
Does she seem swollen around her nether regions, and is she walking like John Wayne? I'm wondering if she might have the beginnings of peritonitis?
Shanijo
Hi thanks everyone for your replies have tried the warm bath a couple times now and nothing but she is still drinking & eating which i suppose is a good sign and her comb is still a lovely bright red I do still think she has an egg stuck as when she is sitting its like she is constantly contracting at the back her wings are drooping at the sides. I am going to try and get her to a vets but have just found that mine do not see chickens does anyone know of any vets in the midlands area close to west bromwich. staceychristie
We're in Tamworth, and can recommend Dunton Veterinary Clinic, it's just off Junc 9 M42 The numbers on here - see the forum for recommended poultry friendly vets. Not sure if he's there today though. No affiliation with him, he's saved 2 of our girls, so only talking from personal experience.
