Our first murder !!

Recommended Posts

Hi, it's so gross isn't it! I had the same thing happen a few days ago. I rescued the frog, but it died. I threw it back to the chickens so its death wasn't a waste! Then I couldn't eat my dinner. I know that the frog won't be in the eggs and that the protein will be used in their body to give energy to make the egg. But, I'm selling the eggs to my neighbour. Am I a bad person? lol

Please be aware that frogs are very very good at playing dead in the hope that whatever is attacking them stops. They will often lie on their backs with their legs splayed and you can poke and prod them and they will still appear very very dead but will hop off when they feel it is safe to do so.

The best thing to do is to put them somewhere shady, moist and out of harm and leave them alone for an hour or two. Chances are they'll hop off. Also try not to handle them too much as the heat from human hands is like us having really bad sunburn or scalding.

Of course, if they are missing vital limbs or organs or have been the unfortunate subject of 'frog rugby', then you can safely assume they are actually departed! ;)

yes, v. good advice! They can play dead for a long time too.

I took it off the hen (v difficult) as i thought they found a dead frog, then it wiggled and open its mouth. I put it in a small bowl with a little bit of water. I often save frogs from my cats like this. I left it in my bathroom for about 30 mins then checked. It was definately dead and its face had been pecked pour thing. I think I felt sick cos I didn't save it. I love frogs, but not to eat. :)

This is probably a stupid question but aren't frogs poisonous? I know they can serious damage a cats health so I thought the same might be true for chickens?

No, the UK does not have any poisonous indigenous frog species.

I think they taste horrid - they have some sort of repellant on their skin - obviously not chicken repellant then

No, that's toads.

I suppose I didn't phrase it quite right, so not poisonous exactly but damaging to the health.

I think that cats should not eat frogs as it causes liver damage (or could be kidney damage)

I just wanted to make sure eating frogs didn't damage chickens.

Anyway it seems not. :)

Oh my goodness !!!

I had no idea !!!

Ever loving hubby has just built a wonderful run next to our pool which, especially at the moment, is constantly the home to frogs, toads and lizards.

It didn't even occur to me.

I'll have to stand guard with the net me thinks !
