New Flock with names and photos

Recommended Posts

hi this is our new flock of Brahmas on their first free range, you will have to excuse the garden but we are in the middle of a major overhaul and renew since we had the house renovated, so lots of mess still! The names were supposed to be Female Hollywood icons as the new WIR is called Featherly Hills, but never turned out that way. there are four of us so we each chose a chicken and each chose their name! May change again though if they are boys!........might keep one if it is a cockerel  only have a neighbour on one side and he is a bit mutton (or pretends to be):lol:

dont know when I will be able to tell if the names will need changing they are about 12 weeks old and one looks about 14 weeks? no crowing yet byt Penny does make a croaky noise almost as if you are running your thumb nail along a plastic comb? I was worried about this noise but she hasn't been sneezing or have any discharge from nostrils or eyes and is acting completely normal in every other way. Any way see what you think :D

Florence the biggest and oldest of the lot

Lola - I know she looks as if she is standing tall but she was eyeing up the grass and does not have this stance the whole time

Penny the croaky one

Aphrodite - the smallest but has the biggest comb

Meg out Terrier she really doesnt know what to think the hens stand up to her, dont flap and have pecked her nose, all she wants to do is sniff their fluffy bottoms!

Lovely! Definitely all girls too :D

Tom,

I hope you are right, I must admit that I didnt know anything about Brahmas until I got these four, but so pleased with them they are so docile and inquisitive. I have been doing lots of reading up on the breed since then and am now a bit concerned that I will not necessarily know I have a cockerel until much later on. (some say not fully mature for 2 years??? ) Is there any specific way of telling in this age bird? or do I just have to wait and see who doesnt lay an egg?:lol:

The rules of sexing them are the same as other breeds. Boys have large, red combs by 8 weeks, girls feather up quicker etc. And the feathering will be different at the age that yours are anyway, the boys would have some swooping tail feathers and some saddle feathers and also would be a lot bigger in the face department.

:D
