Eating Chicken

Recommended Posts

We've had Ross/Cobb and Hubbards - grown slowly they are superb. We've also had Cotswold Gold (?) and they were also lovely.

We were hoping to have our own Light Sussex this summer but only three of the eggs hatched so we'll have to wait a bit longer.

At first we just wanted plain coloured ones which didn't remind us of our egg laying girls  - but we think we can cope with Light Sussex now......just

Lewis - have you tried placing their feed and water as far apart as you have room for and away from their coop? - that is how we get ours to grow slowly as they have to move around,

They're in the (green eglu) so grub + glug are hanging by the door, but they FR most of the day with the others now I've finished school but just stand in the middle of the lawn  Will move them so they have to go a bit further to eat

Been giving them ACV + will worm them next week, just so i know its not that :D

Lewis - we have had some meat birds that really were couch potatoes, moving the food and drink to the furthest point, putting in a low perch they had to get over, etc to keep them active, free ranging just didn't work. They would stop half way down a standard eglu run for a rest to get to the food and even eat sitting down most of the time. We have had others that have been quite active and acted more like chickens so I think it is more a breed issue than anything else.

You might find the Welsumer x Marans a bit light, but the other cross should be okay.

I'm ignoring my own advice now and have set some Ixworth eggs (that I had for two weeks as the intended broody changed her mind and just as I was about to boil them for the dogs, another started sitting). I'm not expecting miracles hatch-wise as the odds are stacked against them, but nothing ventured and all that. Anyway, they're meant to be a good meat bird (well a good utility bird), so if I'm lucky, I'll report back next year.

I keep the boys destined for the pot separate from all my others, that way I don't get attached. Mind you, they also have to stay in the freezer for a few months before I can face eating one.

These are in the (green eglu) separate from the WIR too + will stay there - no names either

I was all :anxious: yesterday 'cos I think there was blood in someones poo, but don't know who.

I hope its just their breeds 'cos everyone else is fine + running round like mad  Will keep a close eye on them and will try the low perch so they have to jump over it, they don't sit down + are still thin, but just stand about.

Good luck with the Ixworths :)
