Plum Vodka anyone ??

Recommended Posts

I investigated a tree in the grounds at work today and discovered that it is a Cherry Plum :D . Picked loads (about 7lbs) and thought I'd have a go at Plum Vodka (I made so much jam last year with my new jam maker that I thought I'd try something else this time)

Does anyone have a good, fail safe recipe ?? I've had a quick google and some recipes say to put everything in a pan and heat it before bottling, some just say put it in the bottle cold. I've noticed that the skins are quite tough - none of the recipes say to cut the plums up first so should I score the skins to let some juice and flavour out.

If I can get some more tomorrow I might have a go at bottling some in syrup.

I made some a few weeks ago - I'll see if I can find it... AH AH - 3 recipes - I think I used the first one.

1 Plums in Vodka

• 1 pound freshplums, either cut up or used whole

• 3 cloves

• 1/4" piece of cinnamon stick or pinch of cinnamon

• 1 cup sugar

• 2 cups vodka

• Place cut up plums and pits or whole plums (pierce the skins to the pit) in a jar with flavorings, sugar and vodka. Be sure vodka covers plums. Steep 3 months, shaking occasionally to mix all the ingredients. Strain and filter. Enjoy the fruit as a dessert as it has been sweetened and has the whole liqueur flavour

2 Plums in vodka

• bottle of vodka

• 450g plums, halved and stoned

• 225g sugar

• Place the vodka, plums and sugar in a large saucepan.

2. Bring to the boil and simmer until the sugar has dissolved. Allow to cool.

3. Transfer the vodka plum mixture into two bottles and store in a dark, cool place for 3 months.

4. Strain the plum vodka through muslin and bottle in 2 clean bottles.

3 Plum Gin

1lb Plums to 1lb sugar to 1 bottle of gin

pierce the plums throw them all in the glass jar with the other stuff & seal

Shake every day until the sugar has dissolved leave for 3m min then bottle

Make sure it never comes in to contact with metal

I make my flavoured gins and vodkas lik my grandaparents too

approx equal measures of fruit (in the case of gooseberries / plums/ cherries prick them with a fork) sugar and spirit.

leave for a month or two (give it a shale every now and then, and release any pressure build up if not doing it in a demi jon)

strain and serve!

last yr I did cherry gin. I pitted the cherries so didnt prick them then oce strained covered them in chocolate! YUYUM

into some of this..........

Only had enough Vodka to make three bottles (note to self, buy more Vodka) . I kind of made it up as I went along and as I still have a MOUNTAIN of plums and as I have some old fashioned kilner jars I'm going to try bottling some in syrup next.

Keep a close eye on it and have some spare vodka to top up. I found that the plums migrated to the top after a few days and tried to escape! And as they absorb the vodka the level of liquid decreases - hence the need for a top up.

It should turn a lovely delicate orangy pink colour as well.

I've not tried mine yet - but it looks pretty!

500g plums

500g sugar

1 litre vodka

we just leave them to macerate for months (shaking a few times) in a big kilner jar, then strain and bottle.

krysia had some of our last lot of plum schnapps so she can tell you if it's any good

Well, it's been in the bottle ten days and looks a gorgeous colour :D .

It isn't really as luminous as it looks in the picture, it was the flash and I can't work out how to turn it off

At the weekend I also pickled my shallots...

And I've just collected up half a bucket of Conference Pear windfalls and made about a litre of pear juice...absolutely scrummy :D .

Can you make this with normal eating plums (i.e. Victoria Plums and the like)?

The Cranberry Spiced Vodka was fantastic last year, but still have some left (I made a LOT!) so want something slightly different and I like the idea of plums... Turned some into Chutney last night, so be good to do something different with some more that I have.

Hi Nicola,

We've just de-plummed our neighbours tree (with their help and permission) and were looking for a good plum vodka recipe. You've got some great jars there - can you tell us what they were originally so we can get some for our own brew??? Thanks!

Do you mean these ones?

These were a fruit juice bottle. It is a pear fruit juice, can't remember the brand name but can check later. They are 1ltr bottles (though I've noticed that they have just got smaller -but probably stayed the same price  ) I have been saving them for a couple of years for this very purpose.
