buffie
I wondered if anyone wanted to help. I am hoping to start a list of hen friendly eateries in my area, I thought we could have a sticky or something listing all our areas and 'nice' places to eat in. I think this should be broiler and battery free. I am hoping to encourage consumers to think and also the eateries to proudly say they serve free range meat and eggs. It doen't have to be organic, If you want to join in great, just ask locally or get something in the local newspaper. The BHWT is obviously working for the battery hen but will be happy to have details of free range egg policy places. A reminder to establishments that this means not just eggs, pasta, desserts but the salad cream etc they serve. Bx
Lesley
Hi Buffie I think it's a good idea - we found a little cafe in Stratford the other day which we though was just for tourists but we will definatley go back because they only use free-range eggs and local products as much as they can. The Dogmother
We have a lovely place just outside Banbury called The National Herb Centre - they grow and sell herbs to the restaurants and supermarkets, also sell them at the centre, they have a lovely cafe/bistro in a converted barn serving food and drinks from fresh produce, and a deli selling all their products and other like-minded stuff, most of which seems to be organic. Great for kiddies as they have an adventure playground, woods, nature trails and quizzes. THEY ALSO KEEP CHOOKS! http://www.herbcentre.co.uk/

Lesley
That sounds good Clare - but I have an aversion to carnations since our episode with the pickpocket on holiday (she was 'selling' carnations! ) we'll just have to take a chicken with us! Cate in NZ
For those of you in Kent I love the cafe at the Organic gardens in Yalding. As much as possible is organic/ home-grown/ home-made & it's delicious. I'm trying to remember if it's veggie or not, I don't think so, but you know I can't remember. Last time I was there I ate veggie, but I usually do when I'm out. It's a bit of a day out for us, a fair drive then we saunter round the gardens and follow up with lunch, but it's just a bit too far to go all that regularly I'm afraid. Switching up a gear we had a very nice luch for hubby's birthday way back in january at Gordon Ramsays restaurant in Claridges, and I couldn't resist asking about the provenance of the meat. They know all their suppliers, and buy in high quality, well cared for meat. I don't think that it was necessarily organic, but definitely free range. But at the top end of the market like that quality is all I suppose, and they charge top end prices to cover it. Although, that said we had a set 3 course menu (with a suprise extra course of soup in an espresso cup) at 30 pounds a head, which was less than I was expecting to pay for such a wonderful meal. Wine was expensive though, no Chateau de Plonk options there. Have to say, I didn't ask about veg though, and I'm pretty certain that out of season veg were served, but I can't remember now. whoopsie
Don't forget LEON. The whole chain uses meat from trusted sources and free range eggs - and the prices are fabulous. I will always eat there if I have the choice now.
