The Dogmother
Lovely kitten Lesley. Let me know if you want help trapping/handling them... got the gauntlets and everything.
Joojoo
You have probably tried this but here goes... Have you tried asking Cats Protection if you can borrow their cages - they will usually do that and set them up for you and then you can trap them overnght and get them to vets the following morning. I still don't think that you should be paying to have them neutered though that's really bad on their part. They are actively trying to reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens and should be helping you with this not leaving you to it. Ultimately, they could all end up on their doorstep for them to care for whilst trying to rehome them and their kittens. If I was closer to you, I'd give you a hand. Egluntyne
If you were to put them in a sack, weigh it down with a brick or two and chuck it in the river the very same people would be pursuing you through the courts. I misread that as you telling her to do that note to self "to avoid heart attacks read posts a little more carefully!" Hope you have recovered from the shock! Lesley
I must admit - I read it that way at first - and I don't have highlights anymore so I'll have to put it down to just my age Jue, the Cats Protection people wouldn't help in any way - because we didn't claim any state benefits We don't have to pay now that we've managed to get the RSPCA vouchers from the friend of a friend..... Luckily, the vet's had a cat trap which we could borrow. Enough of cats.............. ...... we collected the two pigs from the abattoir yesterday afternoon - and had two wonderful GOS chops last night. They are superb! I've had GOS pork once before and it tasted too strong and it put me off. I think it must have come from an old boar and it was tainted - this young boar meat was really divine. The British Lop has been butchered for bacon - so I need to start that tomorrow. Most of the meat is in the freezers.

Mel (& Paul)
If I am ever up your way I will have to buy some off you - I cant find any supplier of pork where the pork is juicy and tasty - it always seems dry

Lesley
Not much going on really - problems because of the FMD scare, we are in a queue to take 2 pigs and 5 lambs as there is a backlog now. The 30 mile zone around Solihull didn't quite reach us but it was still a relief that it didn't test positive. I want to use all the animal and have found somewhere that does organic tanning of the skins. The problem is I only have a short time left now when the skins will be useable, any later in the year and the fleece 'rises' and then when it is tanned, all the fleece drops out I need to source bulk salt - any ideas? I would also like to keep the horns from the ram lambs as they are so beautiful - I need to look around and see what I would have to do with them. The abattoir have said we probably wouldn't be able to have them as they are part of the head and DEFRA won't let us keep them. Do you think it would be too cruel to get the vet to de-horn them before we take them? The two pigs who will be off to the abattoir are getting quite big - if we don't get them in soon, the abattoir will be complaining about their weight As Snowy knows - they have become too clever............. they managed to lift the gate off its hinges yesterday Luckily, we were showing Snowy around and Carl suddenly shot off, leaving us holding Jazz, as he'd noticed a loose pig I daren't even think about what would have happened if we hadn't been there The BIG chicken plan is moving on - just two more Eglus to collect now and one and a half protection pens to be erected............ then a lot of fencing and guttering, new water butts............ and we should be ready for winter
Karen & co.
Gosh it doesn't bear thinking about if you hadn't been around to catch the pig I was wondering what type of salt you need? or is that a silly question, because there are salt mines very close to us in Winsford and Northwich, I could pick some up for you if that helps? (don't think they'd let me down with a pick axe and barrow though ) karen x
Lesley
Thanks Karen but I need a few 25kg bags . I did try contacting Lion Salt in Cheshire - Carl's first suggestion of course as he used to live just round the corner from where you are now - they haven't replied. I will phone them tomorrow. I found a new Company called Anglesey Sea Salt - Halen Mon - on my googling travels. They do lovely salt but in small amounts. We called in there last week when visiting my Mum in Anglesey. We have some lovely Vanilla Salt and some Smoked Salt. Take a look here..... www.angleseyseasalt.co.uk
Karen & co.
The Vanilla salt sounds nice A couple of years ago we stayed in a place in France that specialised in sea salt, and some of it was really special, and they also sold huge bags of 'ordinary' salt, I wandered what they were used for now I know karen x
TheGirlsMum
The salt wouldn't have to be table quality would it? So can't you source some rock salt that they use for de-icing the roads or is this just me being plain silly?
Lesley
No, not silly, but it needs to be fine salt so it woud be too co"Ooops, word censored!". The people who do the tanning say that animal feed merchants have it - for horses apparantly. I can't get any from where we buy our feed. Louise
The vet can ring block the horn area and then saw them off it is only the outside that is hard the middle is quite sqishy so if you really want to keep the horns it won't be too bad for the little dudes Lambs often break their horns head butting and get no anaesthetic when they come off so it is not as bad as you might think Have you asked the abbatoir about a bulk salt supplier as they may know one
Lesley
Thanks Louise - I'll phone the Vet today then. The abattoir manager was trying to dissuade me from keeping the skins, he said, "because it is hard work", but i think it is more likely that it makes more work for them! Thanks for the offer of salt Laura - I read that as Paxo at first
Laura & CTB
Thanks for the offer of salt Laura - I read that as Paxo at first I was extra careful when typing How are the bees doing? Are they all snoozing this time of year??
Lesley
The bees are still very busy - we have a lot of blackberry still in flower. We are hoping to take some honey off this week - depending on the weather, we should have done it on Saturday
