Trougher
Did anyone see Come Dine With Me on TV yesterday early evening? The lady hosting had chickens, some of her guests liked them and would pet and hold them, and some couldn't bear to touch them. After the meal (which "Ooops, word censored!"ody liked!!) she made them play silly games such as the egg and spoon race. Also on TV this week was the new series Giles and Sue Live The Good Life. They were talking about eglus, but they were recreating the 1970s programme The Good Life, so they built a wooden coop, and an absolutely enormous fenced off area, and got some white (Sussex?) chickens. Giles couldn't bear to touch the chickens! I don't know if its just because I've got chickens now so am noticing this, but every time I turn on the TV, it seems,I see chickens! njoy
Also this week, the dorking breed was freatured on Countryfile, BBC 1, and one of the hens was shown being spruced up for a poultry show.

People just dont seem to understand chicken owners do they!!
Stella14
What a shame we don't know about these programmes in advance, I missed them all! The vet programme last Wednesday that it turned out, another member provided the bantams and expertise for (sorry can't recall who), is entirely responsible for me being about to get my first chickens (the coop and run are being creosoted (with the substitute) today! I have thought about having chickens for years, but thought I'd have to wait until I could move to a semi-rural location (not before I retire in 9 years). That TV programme made me realise that I can do it now perfectly well! I wasted no time and was visiting breeders a few days later and reading anything relevant I could lay my hands on (including this forum from which I have learned lots). I don't think it's just being involved in chickens that makes them more noticeable. I think they really are becoming more popular to keep. They fit the Zeit Geist for environmentally friendly, humane animal welfare, good quality food. I never thought I'd be one for a compost heap as I'm squeamish (about disguarded peelings, old tea bags etc, not poo), but as a result of my reading, I'm going to do that too as a result of my forthcoming chickens. I wish I'd seen the good life one. Could someone tell me when it was on and what channel. I might be able to watch it online.

Mercedes55
Watching Giles and Sue made me wonder about goats??? Or is that a step too far..... Tricia Depends if you have the time I guess They do look very sweet and Sue seemed to really enjoy milking them too. Not sure I would want to spend a whole day making goat's cheese though
Trougher
I wish I'd seen the good life one. Could someone tell me when it was on and what channel. I might be able to watch it online. The Giles and Sue programme is on Mondays, BBC2 at 9 pm. I should think this week's would still be available to watch online.

Peaches
I couldn't understand why they were herding the chooks into their coop in the middle of the day.
Stella14
Have now watched it on iplayer. I too felt the need for my own goats. That will have to wait until I move after retirement, but I'm liking the idea of having my own milk and cheese. We started making our own bread last year - so much better than shop bought and made with oil, so no saturated fat. We are now looking forward to our own eggs and compost for the roses. I wouldn't have been slightly interested in any of this as a young woman, but I'm really loving it all now I have A few years under my belt. green
i watched the come dine with me episode too! It did make me chuckle when one of the diners said "I think someone that introduces you to a chicken must have some sort of physcological problem That made me laugh too... And think of my lovely fellow Omleteers! I was quite excited about watching The Good Life one until Sue said something about 'getting an eglu and a couple of manky chickens'. That didn't impress me one bit. She seemed to like the chooks when they actually got them though.
Mollie333
Watching Giles and Sue made me wonder about goats??? Or is that a step too far..... Tricia Funnily enough, after watching it, i'd really like a pet goat or two!
Plum
Knowing you you'll get one too Chickens on escape to the country tonight Why do I get so studpidly excited at the sight of a chicken Perhaps I haven't got enough at the bottom of my garden
Chortle Chook
The sight of a chicken perks me up too, and I introduce anyone who visits to my girls. I even tried to introduce my cousin who is a long in the tooth farmer to them and she clearly thought I was quite barking. But thanks to this club I know I'm in good company I think it is wonderful that there is someone on here who has taken up chicken keeping and Omletering as a result of that program last week. Trougher
Chickens were on the Edwardian Farm on BBC2 tonight - White Sussex and Buff Orpingtons. (Think I'm getting a bit obsessive...... )

staceychristie
Who advises these TV people??? Giles and Sue Live the Good Life, saw them holding chickens upside down by their legs, obviously distressed whilst mite powder was bellowed into the face of the choocks. Edwardian farm saw one man throw a bird off a high roof!!!!! However he resisted the temptation to use it to clean a chimney which he had it up there in the first place - using a bough of holly instead. RSPCA, or MP anyone? migsy
Giles and Sue Live the Good Life, saw them holding chickens upside down by their legs, obviously distressed whilst mite powder was bellowed into the face of the choocks. That was strange. Certainly not how I would do it. Is this the recommended way? Looked pretty nasty to me.
staceychristie
Certainly not. I went and learnt about hens and how to do the best for them for a year before we got our first babbies. (polish halo now) . Their hens looked stunned after the rough handling, flapping all the time. GGGGRRRRRRRR Stacey

Stacey this upset me too, was really looking forward to watching it but everytime the chickens were on they were either chasing them or holding them by their feet, the poor chicken looked frightened (not surprisingly) found myself shouting at the telly ! im fairly new to chicken keeping and by no means an expert but even i knew it was wrong - surely they should have had somebody advising them? scarlettohara
I also thought it was very silly the way Sue kept stuffing eggs into Giles mouth - what a waste of eggs that those girls worked to produce
Trougher
Just watching an old episode of Animal Hospital on Animal Planet, and somebody brought in their chicken which had been got by a fox and had a nasty wound on the back. They put it under anaesthetic to clean up the wound, and 'chicken licken' as she was called survived and did fine. I didn't know you could use anaesthetic on chickens - hopefully I will never need to test it, but good to know it is an option. To go back to Giles and Sue, I have been quite disappointed with that programme, it's ok to be funny, but frankly they are not taking any of it seriously. Those of us who keep animals and try to grow our own veg do have funny stories to tell, and you can't be too squeamish, but there is a serious purpose behind our efforts, and we do try our best. And by the way I certainly haven't put Animal Madhouse on again!
