chuckmum6
I hate the short days. I resentfully let the chickens out at 6.50, wishing I was on the perch myself , when I say let them out they cluck quietly thinking 'Is she mad get up at this time'! I don't get home until it is well after dark, and fumble around with a head torch on shutting them up. Yesterday I did my usual routine, evicting the spiky hens who are molting, and who all now insist in trying to sleep in the nestbox and pooing in it . I briefly poked my head (with torch attached) into the nest box and there seemed like the right number, and stomped off to fluff up the guinea pigs bed (why do they eat it all) and then in to watch (sleep in front of) the tv! This morning I went out bleary eyed to do the morning wake up, only to find a rather cold, half naked (she is molting) little wyandotte bantam waiting for me . Dotty had obviously broken out of the fenced garden they have, I'm sure she had a great time digging up my few remaining plants, however when dusk came she couldn't work out how to get back in again. I assume she roosted in one of the trees in the garden, rather a chilly night for her, she ran to me like a shot and was quite keen to be picked up too! She seems to have learned her lesson, as have I, I properly counted all of my chickens tonight!!! Hopefully the nice new bright outside light will make the whole process easier when it is fitted on Friday.
Wolfie
Dotty is one lucky chick - for the fox not to sniff her out. Very cold last night. I bet she was first in tonight Our outside lights must be visible in the next village when we put our gang to bed.

chuckmum6
I'm going to still be modeling the head torch as the electrician let us down again, so no light! Last time, now we will have to find someone else , does no-one want work?

Chortle Chook
I'm scared of leaving one of mine out. My 2 black ones are particularly hard to spot especially as when they are in they huddle together in the darkest area at the end of the perch looking like one chicken. This evening I was about to shut the door when I spied one underneath their hen house. I'll be counting now rather than just looking and stroking. Angie
A couple of nights ago my SIL went out to close his girls in and thought they were all in bed .....he didn't take a torch with him..........He shut All three out and was so cross with himself when he saw them already out the next morning. And he goes off to work at six on a morning he felt really bad. ..........Then this morning he let them out and didn't check the water........It was frozen solid......his poor girls were without water for four hours. We have called him the chicken killer.........his girls are alright....but i have given him a lecture about bringing in the water and feed at night so the water goes out warm on a morning and hopefully not freeze till he is home late morning to check it before he goes back out till evening.....my daughter checks them when she gets in from school /work with the children... I gave him some vasaline too for the delicate parts....
