English Teacher wrong again

Recommended Posts

So annoyed with my english teacher :evil::evil::evil:

Last week we got our grades- I'm in Yr 7 now, and my predicted grade for the end of Yr 9 was a D, and my Yr 11 grade was a B. But the assesment I had just done got a C, so... I've overtaken my Yr 9 target and only have 1 grade to go before I'm at my Yr 11 target???? How did that happen?

And today it snowed all day, and he bet money that we weren't going to get sent home. And guess what happened???

I think that they underestimate marks predictions and make mock exams harder than the real thing sometimes because if they estimate you to acheive high marks you may become complaicant and not put the work in whereas if they project you lower marks and you are working hard to try and acheive that you will probably do better than you think.

Well thats in my experience anyway

This could work in your favour - I got a prize for doing better in my exams than the school expected me too!

Like others have said, look on it as a great personal achievement! Now all you have to do is work extra hard and turn that predicted B into an A and really prove him wrong!!

I think I'm missing the point of why you are annoyed

A few points to consider. Firstly, targets are just that - targets. It's not a case of once a target has been set, that is all you can ever achieve. It's something to aim towards which then can be increased if it looks like you will do better. Secondly, depending on how your school works, it's very possible your teacher is not responsible for setting your actual target. These are usually generated by your KS2 SAT results (or teacher assessment if your school opted out of the SATs). Finally, achieving a grade in one assessment does not necessarily reflect your overall performance. There are so many different strands to English and achieving a C in one area might not mean a C overall.

It's really good that you are interested in your performance but suspect by your tone that your annoyance may be to do with your feelings towards your teacher, not this issue. It's worth looking at targets in your book and speaking him to ask him what areas you should be focusing on in order to develop. Whatever this particular assessment was (and it sonds like you should be really proud of yourself),there may be other bits you can focus on.

I'm intrigued by you working in grades in Year 7 rather than levels??? On a much bigger scale, I'd be very surprised by a Year 7 student working at a GCSE grade C. Not because of ability but because of the maturity of thought, vocabulary and expression required.

That's my opinion, anyway. For what it's worth, I've never come across a student who is worried that they will achieve their targets early!

I've just been to a meeting at ED school about this very subject. She has just become a year 7 and her targets were 5a for English and 6b for Maths she has had a few assessments and her attainment levels are 6c English and 7c for Maths. I asked what this meant and what levels could be expected for a Year 7 I was told her targets would have to be raised as she is "obviously a very bright girl" (she thinks she's useless at English and can't do it!) and would probably need to be assessed for Gifted and Talented.

Sorry to hijack you thread but I was wondering if anyone could tell how she is really doing.

Thank you

Hey TheGirlsMum,

Your daughter is doing well! Levels work from 1c 1b 1a 2c 2b 2a etc so 5's and 6's are very good! I'm around the same in English and Maths. My SATS reslts gave me 4c for science but last week i got a 7b for a powerpoint  . For those wondering why it's all in GCSE levels, it's because peole find the whole cba thing confusing.
