RIP Abby - my first ever loss.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

It has been a while since I have been on here, but I knew that people here would understand just how devastated I was on Friday to lose Abby. We took in four ex-batts in July and they have given us so much happiness. Abby became ill a few weeks ago and was treated at the vets for egg bind. She seemed absolutely fine but on Thursday started looking all hunched up and miserable again, we brought the girls in to the house overnight because it was so cold but Abby died at lunchtime on Friday. My boyfriend was with her at the end but she started vomiting and pooing all at once and then had a small fit and died - it was very quick apparently but I feel awful. I came straight home from work and cuddled and cried over her but because of the frozen ground we still haven't been able to bury her. She never did regrow all of her feathers and I lovingly referred to her as my 'manky chicken' because she looked so ragged and slept at the bottom of the nesting box with the other girls on top of her - each morning she would come out covered in poo! She was also the feisty one who chased the dogs! I am just so worried now that my remaining 3 girls will not survive this harsh weather. Minnie has started with a raspy throat this morning so will probably need antibiotics for her. Being at work all day means I hardly get to see them and check they are ok.

I am worried that I did the wrong thing to bring them in the house when it was so cold as the BHWT advised me today to leave them outside because the house can be too hot for them, I really hope I didn't make things worse for Abby.

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor Abby, we also took on 4 ext batts in July and I can totally relate to how you feel about them all. Please don't feel bad for bringing Abby into the house. One of our ex batts was ill on Friday and Saturday with peritonitis and we brought her into the house for 2 nights and she is now back in the WIR with her friends and the difference in temperature didn't seem to have any adverse affect on her. There is no way I could leave a sick girl out in the freezing cold as when they are sick they need all their strength to get better and not everyone has a place they can keep them that is cool enough to stop them overheating but warm enough to help them recover. We can only do the best we can with them and it's obvious from your post that you did everything you could for her.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and support and sorry to hear about other people's losses.

I feel happier now and just want the ground to soften so that we can bury her - she is currently securely wrapped up in the garage which does not seem befitting for such a pretty little girl. It still feels strange going out and not having her under my feet and chasing the dogs but I have taken comfort from the fact she had almost 5 months of happiness.

It is just so ridiculously cold outside that you can't help but feel for them - especially when you look out and see them skidding around on the ice!
