What shall I read next? Recommendation please

Recommended Posts

Am now reading Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger ( author of Time Travellers Wife) again, a bit different, a sort of light hearted ghost story.

I didn't find it light-hearted, and actually found this quite disturbing(!), but would still recommend it.

I've just finished reading The Host by Stephanie Meyers (of Twilight fame). It was very different to Twilight, but I really enjoyed it.

Has anyone read Jean M Auels Earths Children series? Book 7 is due out in March! It's been a long wait - hope it's worth it! 8)

Is she the one who wrote Clan of the Cave bear? I read three, I think, though I was a lot younger then! I liked them, but found them a bit "samey" after a while.

I'm re-reading Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro, as the film is out next month, and I loved the book...and shamefully, I love comparing the film and the book...I like Haruki Murakami...but I have to be feeling clever, as he confuses me sometimes....

The girl who loved Tom Gordon- Stephen King...one of his less obvious novels

Let the Right One In...by John Ajvide Lindqvis great sad, beautiful vampire story..also 2 movies now...

I was quite obsessed with James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels when I was pregnant, quite strange really...just crime novels, but just had to read them!

Love this thread - I am a voracious reader and it is always good to read something on recommendation. I have just ordered the first 2 of the Outlander series - never heard of the author before but they sound interesting. I dread to think how much I spend on books in a year - I dont smoke or drink so it is my only vice

I have friends who never read - they miss out on so much!

Couldn't agree more about Wolf Hall, Never Let me Go and Room. Wolf Hall is my book of the year for last year.

Kate Atkinson is another favourite writer: just reading her latest one called "Left early, took my dog" but if you have not read anything by her I suggest you start with Behind the Scenes in the Museum. She is a brilliant writer.

Have just finished Freedom by Jonathan Franzen which I loved but is very middle-aged, middle-class American angsty.

Not read Toast yet - I adored the tv adaptation over Xmas and I love his cooking so will add it to my list.

happy reading everyone :D

OK, light hearted in that it wasn't scary - well I didn't find it scary  , even rather amusing in places. I'd like to be haunted by a ghost like her :D

Just a quick update... I am working through the list.

I started on Toast and finished it quickly. I did like it but, as mentioned by someone above, I found all the innuendo a little odd. Although I'm sure it shaped him and had a lasting impression, it didn't seem to fit with the book. Or is it just me that thinks that??

I'm now moving on a lot slower as I'm trying really hard to get into the girl with the dragon tattoo. I know it must be really really good as so many people have recommended it to me but I am struggling so much so that my reading has almost ground to a halt. Will persevere

I too found the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo hard going, although it does improve, there are far too many cups of coffee being made and drunk and also it suffers (perhaps inadvertently ?) from what appears to be Product placement, from time to time, complete with the advertising blurb, which just gets in the way of the story....

Generally though I have a problem with "Hyped" books, Labryinth by Kate Moss and The Island by Victoria Hislop were (imo) two of the worst books I've ever had the misfortune to wade through..followed closely by Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code..... :(

I disliked 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' - found it dry & dull & gave up after a couple of chapters.

Didn't like 'Labyrinth' much either, but 'The Island' is a great book :D

I am currently reading 'Major Pettigrews last stand' by Helen Simonson, which is an absolute delight. Its very British & just beautifully written. I simply cannot put it down.

Before that I read 'Sister' by Rosamund Lupton, which was brilliant.Again,I could not put it down & even woke at night to get a few more pages in.Its just brilliant - a real page turner with a fab twist at the end :P

I would highly recommend either of these books to everyone out there who enjoys a great read.

As an aside, the Omlet Book Group is going to pick up again after our Christmas break,at the end of this month.

If anyone wants to join, drop me a pm :P

We could do with some new members,as we have gone through all our current members books now,& may have to start at the beginning again soon

I bought Room at the weekend after hearing a review on C4 (I think). Started it, but the kids talked at me, so I shall have to start it again, but so far sounds very interesting, and very sad. I am currently rereading Women Talking Dirty by Isla Dewer (I love her books) which I borrowed from the library as my MIL has my copy in her house in France :x My ED is reading Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde which she is loving. She loved his Thursday Next series so looks like this is another good one :D
