Here they are - meet the girls

Recommended Posts

Well, I can't say I had a good night's sleep. Our 'free range' dogs tend to bark at times during night. Surrounded by farm land (and wild animals) that's to be expected. So every time I heard them bark last night I was worried about the chickens - were the dogs bothering them? Was there a fox out there? I checked them before bed but was tempted to get out of bed to check in the middle of the night. So I was drifting in and out of sleep and was even dreaming chickens.

First of all, let me give you their names: The Columbine is Willow (suits her and is full of natural, beautiful colours), the White Star is Snowy as she's white and we woke up to snow yesterday when they were collected them and the Bluebell, being so docile, lady like and quiet is, Belle. It just suits her. Now the photos, there are lots - hope you don't mind!

Out we went at 8am when it was starting to get light, as I expected, my tired OH came with me. Here comes Willow.

Snowy is definitely boss and chases Willow away. Although I've never seen Snowy bothering Belle.

Snowy spent some time looking for an escape route.

Belle's so beautiful.

Rain water from the run tastes nicer than from the tap water in the glug. :eh:

Not forgetting Snowdrop, my mother's duck who free-ranges with the five jack russells.

After doing my horse-related chores and fussing the the girls we got ready to go shopping. Our extension had (finally!) been delivered so we needed more pebbles/border and wood chip. I also needed bird sand and grit. So after checking too many times that they were happy and safe, we got ready. Obviously I popped my head over the fence to look at the girls before getting into the car and saw something in the nesting box which I was not expecting. It wasn't straw-coloured... I... 'Is it? It is isn't it? Oh my god it can't be!?!' ....

I was ridiculously excited. And I wasn't expecting an egg today. You'd have thought I'd never seen an egg before in my life. Well, actually, I've never seen a chicken egg this colour before in my life!

It's been weighed with an old-type scales, it looks to be nearly, if not exactly 60g.

I was sure it was Snowy's egg! But OH isn't as sure as I am because it's not quite 'china white' enough for him. And in places it has a few speckles. He thinks there's a slight chance it may be Willow's. But I don't think so!

We've had a busy day, all chicken related. When we put the girls to bed we ended up adding the run extension and three more bags of pebbles for the border. We love them already!

Hey, love the pics. I think the names you have chosen are perfect for your girls. I can't believe you have an egg already, that truly is the ideal first day of chickens!! Perhaps youll have another on Sunday so you can do the best breakfast ever.

Don't you just love the contrast of the red comb, the orange eye & the grey feathers of the bluebell. I still find that amazing every time I see mine!

Yay, faaantastic day! Well done and enjoy. We spend hours watching our girls and they're the funniest things.

Yes, the Bluebelles are pretty and lovable, like a grey fluffy ball with big soulful eyes - and feet like an L plate!

Our Bluebelle Winnie lays eggs just the shape of your first egg, quite round, but normally darker.

Congratulations CM! Lovely looking girls! 8)

I'd guess at the egg being Willows - I've had non blue egg laying columbines and they tend to be that pale pinky colour.

Very pretty!

But all girls look as though they will be producing soon, so you will have others to compare with!

I'd guess that egg is Snowys. It looks exactly like my White stars. OH was disappointed that hers weren't china White but I still have a good range of colours :D Your girls look lovely - you will really notice the differences in their personalities. My White star is mad  my bluebelle is docile and refined and my dark columbine is quiet and timid so they sound very similar. Good luck with them and have fun :D

You've just described my three! :o What good choice in hens we have. :D

I think it's Snowy's too. I'm not too worried about it not being 'china white', I still think it's pretty.

Wow 2 eggs 2 days running clever girl (s) - hope you've had a great day chicken watching CNM - have you eaten the eggs yet?

I just love watching them. They are all so different. :)

I ate the first egg tonight. It was a difficult decision to make - having to crack such a beautiful egg. I had it fried and it was the first time for OH to taste a fresh egg. He was impressed.

Enjoy yours too... hope you have an eggscelter ready for your eggs! :D
