Cranfield Kate

for the love of chickens

Recommended Posts

I have a broken foot (boot and on crutches, no weight bearing for 6 weeks) which is making chicken keeping a little tricky. luckily I'm quite strong so can squat on one leg to clear out the sleeping quarters and finally bertha isn't scared of the crutches so I can get them in and out of the coop okay. so day to day stuff is fine.

but today, I had to do a clean out....

so there I was, on my hands and knees in the run, picking up poo, then crawling out of the coop to put it in the compost, having to stand on one leg and hop to the bin to empty the pan. then back on my hands and knees to clean the sleeping room and then refill with straw which entailed having to hop across the garden in one welly to get the straw from the shed and then return it. then finally, I got them all (bar one) back in the run with the old "shake the corn tub" trick; except for Scrawny who had decided that the little patch of ground in the back corner by the fence was just too fascinating to leave so she refused to move. i then had to herd her (this is on crutches) out from behind the compost bin, round the coop and in through their back door which i collect eggs from.

I swear my neighbours sell tickets to watch me.

Oh poor you, its amazing what you can do if you have to for your girlies,

I had my arm in plaster this time last year for 13 weeks, what a nightmare, but i did manage.

Saying that though, I really need a double prolapse op :(:( ( sorry too much info ):lol:

and am still putting it off as how will I cope.

Hope you get lots of help. and roll on the summer.

Oh no, sounds like a huge ordeal!

Sorry I've still not made it to see you and the girls Cranfield! It's been a busy

christmas period. Would still love to sometime....

My partner and I could come and clean them out!!?

Serious offer.

Don't think anyone needs to be going through that!

Good luck.

Oh no....That's really NOT good...but you are a complete star to make it into such a good story for the rest of us.

Do hope there are some helpful friends/family who could volunteer to make things a little less impossible for you & that your chickens appreciate your sterling efforts - way over & above the call of duty.

I badly broke my little toe in the summer and couldn't put any weight on my foot for a month. Fortunately it was right at the start of the summer holidays so the kids all earnt extra pocket money by helping with the chickens  Quite a few times though I had to hop out there and tend to them myself. The language was colourful
