I'd certainly wait for the diary. If someone is going to complain about you anonymously the least they can do is provide the proof. I'm very against a society where it just takes one nasty neighbour to get one in trouble with the authorities.

My neighbour doesn't moan at me about our boys crowing,but does to other local women...some of whom are my friends too,& who have passed her comments on to me.

I don't feel inclined to do anything until she speaks to me face to face.

I shall then mention that she rented the house with Indy in situ for 18months,then bought it,knowing full well he was in the garden

We're urban. Absolutely ridiculous as you live in the country and personally I think I wouldn't have bothered to bring Flash indoors

 

If you remember our cockerels were from hatching so it was never our plan to have cockerels and they were very loud once they started crowing properly. Weren't able to find them homes so did eat them in the end. Since found out though from two neighbours that they really miss the crowing Mind you I know who complained as he lied in the summer to the council and told them we had cockerels again EHO let a huge hint slip out.

I think a lot of people don't understand the nature of the "countryside"

It's not roses round the cottage door. It is the livelihood of a diminishing number of people and it comes with as much, though different, "noise" as the town.

People can move into it from the town with false expectations.

I remember being shocked at the countryside noise when I moved here, the lambing is by far the worst with the night-time harvest close behind but its the nature of the countryside and people should at least understand it even if they werent expecting it

 

We had about 16 cockerels a while back in the field and had 9 in the garden at one point none of them were shut up at night- our wonderful wonderful neighbours never raised an eyebrow - I hope they never move out

I moved to the countryside with similar hopes and it's a shame I am having to share the air space with somebody similarly moved but wanting only the views.

I hate it when the farmers take the lambs away but I just get on with it. I eat lamb after all!!!

So the complaint is about a vorwerk crowing. They are supposed to have a particularly nice crow

 

The trouble is, if people want to get upetty about something, they will no matter when, no matter where. What gets me is the support that is given to these prissy neighbours by 'the authorities' when, if TV programmes about really dreadful neighbours are right, the same authorities can't or won't do anything about very real problems. A friend of mine used to live next to someone who would lob glass milk bottles over into her garden whenever she sat outside and the authorities were never able to stop it.

But back on subject... In a built up area I agree that neighbours need to be extra considerate re making a noise - I include children and dogs etc as well as Crowing, as by definition people do tend to be living on top of each other. But in the country, there are certain sounds you should expect - and crowing has to be on that list, along with a lot of other animal sounds that are normally a lot louder at all times of the day and night then a city person might perhaps think...

Same here, a cockerel is a banned noise and not allowed at all. However, if you want to have all night parties and stomp around your house from 11pm until 7am that's allowed, as it is household noise

 

When I had my cockerels (just until they were old enough to be killed for meat) the only complainants were the noisy neighbours, who, because they are the noisiest, don't appreciate that everyone can hear them as they can't hear themselves! For weeks people were coming up to my mum (who is well known in our area) and asking her if I had a cockerel as it was lovely to hear in a city. When we killed them everyone was upset but understanding.

 

If you believe in karma this'll make you laugh; the noisy neighbours had a loft extension with big dormer window. As it is the highest flat point around all the wild birds perch there in the mornings, so they are heard complaining about the starlings twittering and singing outside the bedroom window every morning, and especially early in the summer

What I don't understand is why people don't use ear plugs - I always have some handy - we have a newborn next door and a student house down the road. I just bung them in and go back to sleep.

Well, when I asked for feedback on the measures taken so far and how long I'd have to wait I got this

 

whether or not a statutory noise nuisance exists would only be established by an

investigation based around the criteria I mentioned previously.

 

I will wait for the diary sheets to be returned at the end of the

prescribed period - this is four weeks. The entries will give me an

indication of the frequency that the alleged nuisance is occurring and

help me determine whether or not further investigation is warranted.

 

Please keep in mind that at the moment we have only have a complaint of

alleged nuisance.

 

I let Flash back in with his hens at 7.45ish whereupon he treads one or two and crows mightily for a minute .....then eats his breakfast

That is exactly what i was told they have to wait for the person to hand in the noise diarys then if they think he is a nuisance they will put recording equipment in the persons house to see how loud he is and if they say he is a noise nuisance you get served with an abatement order to get rid if you dont do this with in 28 days you go to court where you will find out who complained as they have to meet you in court to be a witness is that stupid or what id go to court to find out which one of my neighbours is two faced what i think happened in my case is someone thought they would phone up the council and they would come straight around to my house and tell me you cant have a cockeral in a residential area and take it off me but they cant they have to go through the procedures well as it happened they couldnt be bothered to fill in the diarys so case closed but the woman at the council has told me if they complain this year the case gets started all over again i think ive got a good idea who it was the young girl renting the property next to me we had a lovely chat where i explained to her the procedure and also to her i am willing to meet the person in court and will then take great pleasure in making their life a misery to which she repied oh right well it defenatly wasnt me im sorry if i sound horrible but i am fed up with people who think they can make as much racket as they like but a couple of crows aday is the end of the world good luck leanne

This morning when I put Flash back he tried, once they were outside, to tread one of the older hens and she squared right up to him and they were both upended with their wings out at each other.

I have been keeping the pop hole shut and putting him back via the egg port and then letting them all out. Today I let the hens out in the run then put Flash in with them...............perhaps that's the explanation

It may be worth keeping your own diary too

 

That way if someone says Flash wa crowing at 6am you can produce your records that say he was in his box in the basement at that time - if you can chip away at their credibility it would help

Going by what Miller says, I don't think I'd worry too much just yet. In fact I think I'd be tempted to just put your cockerel right out with the girls again. It is quite a procedure for the person who has lodged the complaint to go through. I think that some people just like to complain to authorities and often they will not then be bothered to complete the diary and do the sound equipment thing. I'd only start putting him in a box when (if) it gets to the point where you have 28 days to do something about the 'problem' . At that point I'd certainly then keep my own diary.

My sister lives in a village opposite a farm and the next door neighbour complained about the cows going in to be milked, the famer had to resort to sweeping the road and hoseing every day. He doesn't have cows any more but sometimes his chickens escape and they complain. They also complained to the highways because my niece has special needs and a yellow bus picks her up and drops her off every day. They said that they didn't want to see it. Now the farmer has given the day centre where she goes a piece of land and a polly tunnel to grow vegetables so now more yellow busses go past.

Anyway, hubby retires in September and the house is on the market in March. I am refreshing the paint in the kitchen at the moment. It's a lovely house but too big for us now. I can't wait for what's round the corner. The sun is out and I'm planning veggies and more chickens and more bees. Just have to find the right place but we've agreed to sell then rent then look but there are plenty of places about

We've got into the routine of moving Flash at night but the little monkey is burying himself under hens now so we have to slide the roof off to get him

Im just praying i dont hear anything this year as i will never beable to rehome teddy as he has a few problems his beak needs trimming every 3 weeks or he cant eat he has trouble jumping he doesnt show any interest in his 7 wives so is no good if you want babies and he seems to sometimes live in his own little world so he would have to be pts as its hard enough to rehome healthy cockerals let alone my poor special needed one leanne

Hope you can get it sorted We had 3 cockerels for a while, 2 table birds + then Mr Dino who we were trying to rehome (too cute to eat ). If we just left the eglu open they'd be out there at half 5 crowing away, and I think its worse if theres more than one so they compete

If we shut the eglu they were fine and would stay pretty quiet

 

I think they only woke the neighbours up once, and that was the nice ones who we see all the time. The other side who would be the first to say anything, never did!

Mom was really paranoid so he had to go asap. He's now been rehomed with a friend in the country where there are other cockerels and geese, so should hopefully be ok!

 

Haven't been there to ask, but am sure the neighbours miss the noise, just not at 6am
