Linzandtone
Hi, Were new to keeping chickens and collected these ladies on Sunday from Little Hen rescue. Just wondered if anybody had an idea on what breed they may be? Thank you!! Edited January 18, 2011 by Guest
Old Speckled Hen
The second one resembles a black Araucana ...perhaps

Snowy
The first one is very pretty - looks like a wheaten maran in colour, but no idea if she is the right shape for a maran!
alet_chicken
Sorry I can't help, just wanted to say they are very pretty (esp. the wheaten one). Well done on taking rescue hens and enjoy your henkeeping experience!
Redwing
They both look like cross breeds but are very pretty. It looks like the top one will lay white eggs and the black one will lay pale blue hopefully judging by the colour of their earlobes
daxigirl
I think the little black one may have some Appenzeller in there, one of mine (Lisa-M) has a comb like that and the little beehive hair do behind, that could also explain the white earlobes. I don't think she's Araucana because she's got wattles and they don't have them. They're both very pretty girls, I didn't know you could get ones like that from hen rescues. Redwing
They both look like they are a bit of all sorts, there could be either Appenzeller or Araucana in the bottom one, the comb and hairdo isnt correct for any of those though but thats probably the other breeds influences in there the hairdo is more Silkie than anything else and Silkie cockerels are rather partial to hens that dont belong to them which seems to result in a startling amount of hairdos in 'pure' birds I didnt know you could get rescue hens like this either - I'm guessing they were 'rescued' as someones unwanted hens or had been abandoned or something. they are both in very good condition so the rescue people did a good job with them
Daphne
Very pretty girls and very clear photos Here's hoping you have lots of fun with them!
Linzandtone
Hi, Thank you for all your info, I thought they probably had a good mix of breeds in there. Yes I was pleased when Little Hen Rescue said they had rescued Bantams as I was hoping to get 3 different coloured birds so we could tell them apart! They had been living wild near Kings Lynn so some of them were very flighty! They managed to catch 40, but I'm not sure if there were any more. Had our 4th egg this afternoon another small pure white one! The others were lovely for breakfast with toast!!!!
Luvachicken
I think all of them look lovely and hope that one day hubby will let me rescue some. Well done you for getting to look after them
Daphne
D'you know, I thought there might be some poland in your black bird. She doesn't have a full crest and her comb is far too large/visible but her size, tail position, leg & eye colour and general appearance do remind me of mine. If her ear lobe is in fact white, not the lovely pale blue colour it looks in the photo, then that would be poland-like too! They do lay a small white scrummy egg so maybe its hers
Mr Rhode Island Red
dunno about the breeds, but they're lovely

Is chicken roundabout somewhere in Norfolk still going strong? I found this http://www.chickenroundabout.co.uk/ Edited to say........ Ah just noticed it was little hen rescue. Is this where they came from then, ie Ditchingham. It says on their website that they are going to be rescued. I bet that was a palaver
